I don't think trial can/will be held in Durham - if the case even gets that far.

The AV will never take the stand. She is too unstable and just wants the whole thing to go away. She has been on a self-destructive track and will continue that way, unfortunately.

When the case is dismissed or dropped there will be violence in Durham. Nifong has generated so much racial animosity it has to go somewhere.

The boys will do okay. It is so clear they have been accused unjustly. I wish I were a senior partner in a law firm. I'd make sure they had a nice summer internship. It would win a lot of business for me from Duke alums.

Nifong is going to get dragged before the bar. It will be interesting.

Universities spend millions of dollars in their recruitment efforts, for scholars, athletes, all-round students. April is the most critical time for decision making and people are swayed by negative publicity. Parents get protective of their child going off to college. This mess will absolutely have an effect on recruitment.

I have nothing against Duke, and as you said, unless you get into Harvard (my alma mater) Duke is a decent place to go! LOL. And the weather really doesn't get too cold up there. Really, it doesn't. (well sometimes it does)

Agreed. The point of Nifong's inquisition was for short term political tactics. Few Duke students/parents vote in local Durham elections and he hung a couple of students for the stampeding crowd. As a Duke alum with high school children, this episode is unnerving. I love Duke but as long as that dingaling Brodhead is running the show students have no protection, and you would have to matriculate knowing that you should not, under any circumstances, leave that campus. The fact that Durham reelected Nifong suggests that Duke hatred in Durham runs deeper than we thought. I saw an interview tonight of a Duke LAX player who made clear that they were convicted by the media and the University threw their own students in the trash. The indicted almost certainly are innocent of a rape, and even if they are responsible for some boorish behavior, a University President should be expected to support his students, even if is only morale. Instead, Brodhead destroyed their college careers and threw them to the wolves.

What is the best way to make our displeasure with his lack of judgment and loyalty to Duke known? I found it interesting that the LAX player interviewd said that the faculty and administration threw them away but the players felt that the alumni base was there for them. Personally, I stopped contributing as a protest over Brodhead allowing Palestinian terrorists on campus. I suspect the only thing people like Brodhead respects is money.

WHat can we do?

I'd love to see Duke alumni offer summer jobs to these young men and provide whatever support they can.

Perhaps the alums are already doing that. I hope so.

Alum or not don't let your kid go there. Would your parents have let you matriculate at a school in Mississippi in 1962 or 1963 no matter how good it was reputed to be academically? I don't know your age, but I bet not.

It does not matter that the racists are now black not white. It is not a situation any parent should put their child in.

Just a guess.... the vote split along racial lines and the trial is a GO.

A beaming Nifong, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, used his time with Greta to point out he had previously fired Freda, and to once again say the defense motions yesterday reflected the attorneys were "afraid to face me in court". What a good example of humility, of being a graceful winner, and beginning the process of bringing the community together.

I'd be worried, too, if I had a child at Duke. I don't think Cowgirl meant all the people in the city. I would have thought you'd guess who she meant. I'm sure she's talking about the Duke president not standing by his coach or the team, and by not objecting to the NBPP visiting. She's also certainly talking about the DA, the police force, and the judge.

I'd be mighty concerned now if my white Duke student was arrested and "convicted" without a trial because someone merely accused him/her of something. Then the DA wouldn't look at the evidence my lawyer presented? This is a lynching. I'm even concerned for these guys if there is a trial...you never know what a jury will do.

Hopefully this will never happen again, but I wouldn't be so sure. And if these boys are found innocent and stay at Duke, they'll have to look over their shoulder from now on while they're in Durham. Nifong has made this a race thing, and there are a few very angry people out there. They honestly believe that three rich white guys raped their black "sister," while the other guys let it happen. The only possible way this could be good for the white guys is if she admits she lied. And that's not gonna happen.

This came from the Duke conservative website when it was announced that the NBPP was coming to Durham:

"With reports of drive-by shootings and off-campus assaults on Duke students, the frenzied, racist rhetoric of the New Black Panther Party is the last thing this community needs."

I'm just catching up. I can't believe any community Dem or Repub elected someone so obviously inept. Sad for the victims: Seligmann, Finnerty, their families, Duke and Durham...the nightmare continues.

I think it is sad for Durham and will hurt Duke. This case still is not going to come to trial. And a DA elected with less that a majority is not someone in a strong position.

How does Duke fix this? The admin threw them under a bus. Now Durham has driven over them. All caused by a woman who decided to claim rape...and is more than likely lying.

I wonder if there are legal beagle freepers who could describe the process of how to get rid of a DA or disbar him. Something is seriously wrong with a legal system that operates like this.
I guess I should have learned with OJ.

"mind boggling" is all I can say.

The video at WRAL shows one of the attorneys for the players hugging Nifong. Guess his retainer wasn't large enough? If I were a competent attorney I'd be as far from Nifong as possible. IMO , he's an embarrassment to the profession.

I just watched it. Now why would he hug him? Is it common for a defense attorney to schmooze the DA? I wonder. I'd have a hard time looking at the guy.

I respect your comments.

However, all you have to do is look at the O.J. trial.

Not only was O.J.'s DNA and his bloody size 11 Bruno Magli footprints all over the crimescene BUT the most damning evidence was that the photographed bloody trail indicated
the killer had been injured on his Left hand or forearm.

If the Jury bought into the unlikely scenario that bloody socks and a glove (with the victims blood and OJ's blood) were planted on Simpson's estate. And the rare Bruno Magli
bloody shoeprints in Simpsons size were also planted.
BUT, HOW DID THE POLICE CUT SIMPSON's LEFT FINGER (without his knowledge)?

Multiple witnesses testfied that on the Plane back to Los Angeles Simpson had his finger wrapped and a bloody bandage was visible - on his left hand/finger. So, if authorities planted all the evidence, how did they cut Simpson's finger without his knowledge? The finger on the Left hand that the Killer's tracks indicate the Killer had the same injury. Simpson also changed his story on how he cut his finger. In his last account, he couldn't remember how he did it.

A huge pile of overwhelming evidence was overlooked and in one of the longest trials in history, the Jury took 45 minutes to find Simpson NOT-GUILTY and then the Jury Foreman raised his hand in the BLACK POWER signal to Simpson.

The jury will not use the same logic that you are applying here. This is why NIFONG is so confident. He's got them if it's heard in Durham and then he's a Lifelong hero in that area. This is why one of the conditions of the Black Panthers (that spoke with NIFONG) was that the case be held in Durham. These guys will be convicted in a farce of a trial if this is held in Durham.

I would expect the DA and the Media to focus repeatedly on the N word - the Grandpa comment (even though the Neighbor hates these kids and Kim reports a different Slur) and they will bring people in that will testify (some untruthfully, I'm sure) that they had witnessed these kids using the N word or directing it at minorities. They will also concentrate on the OTHER trial of Finnerity in Georgetown - they will classify that as a HATE Crime and they will paint the players as all the same. Look at the early coverage of the N&O - they've already done exactly this and followed this script. The players were KLANISH they said. The players are privleged and they disdain for diversity.

These are 18-20 year old kids. I'd venture to say that they'll find distasteful things on their computers. This will come out and the media will sieze on the salacious aspect. These KIDS are GUILTY in DURHAM.

All one has to do is look to Brentwood, O.J., Ron and Nicole to see what's going to happen in this case.

But there's no DNA, a bad lineup, alibis, a third person (yet to be named) with a mustache (impossiblity), and a woman who's made false claims before (especially the attempted murder by her ex)

There has to be reasonable doubt in there somewhere.
