What makes you think it wasn't a 40mm bofors from WWII?

Back when I was a kid, I knew somebody who had used an old Hotchkiss shell as a doorstop for years . . . until a visitor who happened to be a former artillery captain pointed out that the darned thing probably was live. The EOD guys from Ft. McPherson showed up and carried it away. Don't know what happened after that or if it was live. That black powder was probably pretty darned unstable after 100 years . . .

Got it.
All these picture of 40mm grenade cartridge has confused folks.
40mm Bofers Anti-Aircraft projectile is probable.

Ok, I already know the deminsion difference between a bofors and a 40mm grenade round, and your point is what? Did he say how big the round was?

His name wouldn't happen to be "Mr. Hand," would it?

No specifics yet on round involved, I just posting pics in response to your reference to Bofors 40mm remark, hope it helps give some scale to possible round.. I had a couple teachers that had spent 20 and 40mm rounds as doorstops and shelf display.

Darwin award? I'd say the opposite. He blew his hand off -- thus (perhaps) making it more likely that he will seek to relieve himself in more, er, procreative ways.
