Peter Green was a musical genius......and a total nutcase. Damned shame, too.

He gave his Les Paul (with that sooooooo sweet sound) to a gentleman who picked up guitar BECAUSE of Peter Green.......Gary Moore. Moore is still, hands down, my favorite guitarist.

Do I have the wrong artist or did Jeff Beck play guitar on a version of this song in the 70's.

I think the singer was frankie ... ummm, for some reason I want to say Miller .... not 100% sure on this one.

That album was recorded in Memphis and produced by Steve Cropper. Beck asked Cropper to join him on a few tunes but Cropper declined and said that there just wasn't room for another guitar.

When the album was finished the first concert date was in Memphis, summer of 1972 if my memory serves me correctly. I saw that concert. Awesome guitar playing by Beck and Tench was really fantastic on piano and vocals. Whole band was really tight. "I'm Goin' Down" was about 20 minutes long.

The last great blasts of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac: the three-disc Fleetwood Mac Live at the Boston Tea Party.

Note one Top Topham partaking of Rattlesnake Guitar's proceedings: he is the gentleman replaced historically in the Yardbirds in late 1963...by a kid nicknamed Slowhand... ;)

And Slowhand was replaced in John Mayall's band temporarily by Peter Green when Clapton went to Greece for a few months, then permanently by Peter when Clapton left the band for good. But Peter didn't stay long, he soon left to form his own band, Fleetwood Mac.

There were many more people who participated in the making of "Rattlesnake Guitar" than are listed. According to the liner notes that come with the CD, many artists were under recording contracts and weren't allowed to play on the album so their names had to be left off of the credits.

The liner notes also tell how very respected a musician Peter Green was. About 100 musicians actually took part in the making of the album and many more wanted to participate, but for one reason or another (recording their own albums under contract, touring, Ct.) just couldn't make it.

Rory Gallagher died within a month or two after he recorded his two songs on this album. His version of "Leaving Town Blues" is incredible.

Rod Price and "Lonesome" Dave Peverette are both dead now. Their guitar work is some of the most blistering stuff on the album.

Somehow Gary Moore got left off of Rattlesnake Guitar, so he did his own Peter Green tribute album, "Blues for Greeny", the same year, 1995. Gary was a friend of Peter and the whole story about how he got Peter's 1958 or 59 Gibson Les Paul is detailed in the liner notes of that CD. Peter tried to give him the guitar but Gary didn't feel right about that, so he sold his own gutiar for 150 English Pounds Sterling and gave Peter the money to pay for the Les Paul.

These are two albums not to be missed by blues fans or by Peter Green fans. All involved put their hearts and souls into the effort and it shows.

They later found out the 'secret' to that Les Paul of Green's / Moore's......that sound, that tone.

The pickups were wound 'wrong'.

There was a Gary Moore signature Les Paul out for a while (with the "wrongly wound" pickups and all), but haven't seen them on the market in a while.

One of the most relaxing things I do is put on the "Still Got the Blues" CD, plug in my own Les Paul Custom (into a Line6 PODxt Live, then into a Fender Twin) and play the entire album.

I also have all three discs of "Boston Tea Party". My favorites are "Madison Blues" and "Jumping at Shadows".

Yes, this was really the last hurrah for Peter before he totally lost it.

There is a huge amount of info about Peter Green on the web. I looked at it all. I have been a fan since about 1967 and Fleetwood Mac's "Then Play On" remains my favorite album to this day.

In reality, I used to have a Gibson SG with the vibrato tailpiece and everything. A dark maroon one. Talk about coincidences...

However, I can't play anything and I sold it years ago.
