Is Dr Who worth watching??? Not really into British Sci-fi..Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
The first episode, "Rose" is a bit weak, but the second one that will air that same night (3/17), "The End of the World," is simply fantastic! Plus it sets the stage rather effectively for the remainder of the 13 episode first season.
You simply MUST watch it...

I will be attending a Doctor Who Viewing Party on the 18th. We will start off with some older Dr. Who Episodes (not sure which ones),and continue on with the NEW Dr. Who episodes.
Not sure which of the older episodes; my buddy has many of them taped on VHS from when they were on our local PBS station.
You read that right....

Not to worry. After all, this type of show isn't exactly cheap to produce and Ronald D. Moore, the Executive Producer on this show, wants it to be of the highest quality. Remember, this is the same Ron Moore that made some of the very best episodes of
Star Trek: The Next Generation and
Star Trek: Deep Space 9.

Rumor I've heard is that NBC is considering upping the budget/season length/etc. and moving it to full-blown NBC/broadcast. I'm not sure if it would be rebroadcast on Sci-Fi, or broadcast the same week as it would be on NBC, or what.
NBC didn't have stellar ratings on the episodes they have shown, but they showed them months after they aired on Sci-Fi, and in timeslots all over the place (basically filler). The rumor is, they think that because of the accolades from the critics, plus Sci-Fi's ratings of first-run episodes plus it's huge DVD and iTunes sales, that showing it first run on NBC would get it huge ratings. They also think they could use it anchor a weeknight block of programming. I don't watch enough NBC to know how they are doing, but I know other Sci-Fi series on other channels (notably Lost) are doing huge ratings.
My worry is that they will censor it or that upper level management will get involved and try to tone down some of the hot topics (terrorism, abortion, stem cell, etc).

My wife and I caught a few of the 2005 Doctor Who episodes during a trip to Canada.
It's different in several ways (notably, that they have an actual decent budget, and they have some pretty cool sets/locations). What I thought was neat, was that they did pay homage to past Doctor Who shows, as well as Douglas Adams. The way the TARDIS appears/reappears, was done as a little tribute to past Doctor Who effects - they could have had some kind of fancy-schmancy graphics and sounds, but, well I won't give it away, but they did it tastefully. They also had an episode that felt a lot like a tribute to Douglas Adams/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe. I don't know how many episodes Adams wrote or worked on, but I remember hearing it was quite a few.
I still can't place Chris Ecclestone (spelling is probably wrong) in regards to previous Dcotor Whos, but he has a lot of depth.

notably, that they have an actual decent budget You mean laser guns dont lose their sound effects half way through the show, because they ran out of budget? :D

Doctor Who is the British revival of the series from 2005 being imported to the USA. It was good and I think SciFi fans will like it.
I think it starts on SciFi in a couple of weeks with the first episode, 'Rose.'

We'll have to see what the new stuff is like - I started losing interest in the Series about the end of Peter Moffet (aka Davison, aka 5th Doctor) - probably more because of the tedious Companions than anything (best ep: Adric dies! YES! Couldn't have happened to a worse companion). Then too, every time I saw PM all I could think of was "Tristan Farnon with his arm shoulder-deep inside a cow". :)
The first four Doctors were the best and, by and large, all their Companions were excellent.

Let's just say that they probably spent more on the second episode of the 2005 series, than they did on the last full season in the '80s.
Or to put it another way, if they had a K-9 pop up in this series, it would look like it could do more than go five feet forwards and backwards, lol.
