I just don't see any Urban Travelers springing for a Costco Card when they can still buy Thunderbird at a Bottle Shop and get a brown paper bag thrown in...

(Real engineers don't answer "why" questions.)
Qualifying setup for the Daytona 500 -
The Sunday qualifying runs will set up the following:
- The front row for the Daytona 500 (fastest 2)
- The order for each Gatorade Duel but not necessarily who is in each Duel -
- The fastest qualifier will start the first Gatorade Duel on the pole regardless of whether he would otherwise have started in the second Duel, and the 2nd-fastest qualifier will start the second Gatorade Duel on the pole regardless of whether he would otherwise have started in the first Duel.
- The teams that finished in the "odd" positions of the top 35 in 2005 owners' points (20/99/48/17/2/24/38/88/25/8/21/9/1/07/66/49/11/14) will compete in the first Duel.
- The teams that finished in the "even" positions of the top 35 in 2005 owners' points (16/6/12/26/19/42/29/01/31/5/41/18/40/45/43/22/55) will compete in the second Duel.
- The "field-fillers" will alternate Duels in the order of speed, starting with the second Duel (unless a "field-filler" is the fastest-qualifier, in which case he starts the alternating pattern with the first Duel).
- The "top 35" and the fastest 4 field-fillers in qualifying will be guaranteed to start the Daytona 500 as long as they compete in their respective Duels.
The Gatorade Duels on Thursday will set most of the lineup for the Daytona 500 as follows:
- Except for the pole-sitter in the first Duel (who will start on the inside pole for the Daytona 500), the finishing order of the "top 35" plus the top-finishing 2 "field-fillers" will fill the "inside" row in order (starting with the 3rd position), wrapping around to the outside row if there are at least 2 more "qualifiers" in the first Duel than the second.
- Except for the pole-sitter in the second Duel (who will start on the outside pole for the Daytona 500), the finishing order of the "top 35" plus the top-finishing 2 "field-fillers" will fill the outside row in order (starting with the 4th position), wrapping around to the inside row if there are more "qualifiers" in the second Duel than the first.
- The remaining spots through 42nd (1, 2, or 3 spots depending on whether 2, 1, or 0 "field-fillers" were among the fastest 2 qualifiers respectively) will be filled by the fastest-qualifying "field-fillers" not already in the Daytona 500.
- The 43rd spot will be filled by either the most-recent Winston/Nextel Cup champ not already in the Daytona 500 or the next-fastest-qualifying "field-filler".
- The remainder of the "field-fillers" will load up after the Gatorade Duels and get a head start on going back to the shop.

Are We There Yet?
........About now, I can hear you asking, Does this column have a purpose or a theme? The answer to that is a simple No. Racing has yet to begin, which leaves a writer precious little about which to write. With that in mind, how about I throw out a few semi-controversial topics and you all take a minute to share with me your take on them. No, really, I mean it! Id like to start a dialogue with my gentle readers pertaining to the current subjects of the day. Would you like to play along?
First, but not foremost, Ill give you the entrance of Toyota into the ranks of the NASCAR Cup series. In a recent Tireside Chat with Mike Contreras, I gave my view on that, which you can find here: http://insiderracingnews.com/PCP/012706.html
Obviously, I dont view the coming of Toyota as the end of civilization as we know it. Theyre coming and theyll stay as long as it remains profitable and challenging; then theyll be on their way to greener pastures
maybe balloon racing, who knows? Given the fact that all of the cars are already virtually identical save the emblems and headlight decals, does anyone really care?
snip~~
Okay, this one cant be laid on NASCAR (this week), but yall know its been a pet peeve of mine forever, and thats what I see as the massacre of our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. Reverting back to the Stupor Bowl for a moment, that symbol of all that is America was summarily slaughtered with malice by Aaron Neville and Aretha Franklin this past Sunday. Neville delivered the first half as though someone had put a vibrator where the sun dont shine, only to be followed by Franklin, screeching, screaming and bouncing her all too hefty way through the second half. It was
in the kindest words I can muster in print
a tragedy of major proportion, and should be outlawed.
NASCAR, take note on this one! Americans are growing increasingly tired of hearing our Anthem disrespected and corrupted by supposed celebrities. PLEASE
advise your respective track owners and their PR departments that your fans would like to hear our National Anthem sung with respect, not as a take-off on r-e-s-p-e-c-t. Id urge you to make it mandatory that someone actually hear and judge a performers rendition of the Anthem BEFORE paying them the big bucks that they think their names demand. Its a difficult song to sing, given the wide range and key changes required. Some entertainers make up for that by simply changing the tune and/or words to fit their own style. Thats unsatisfactory and the result can only be described as Ugly.

Check that "field-filler" alternating item. The alternating starts with the first Gatorade Duel (unless the fastest "field-filler" is 2nd-quick in qualifying, in which case the alternating starts with him in the second Duel).

Will try and be here for the next practice, but we are about to get hammered by a "blowing blue norther". Hopefully the cables will stay attached to the poles!

Thanks to all for that.
It's only fitting that the most handsome, sexy and fabulous driver of that Bud car begins the season for us. IMO anyway! Not to mention that he's an all around nice guy too.

I don't think you are alone there!
I tried to keep up with it on TP, but it wasn't making sense at times so I didn't post. At one time it showed "last lap" speeds with JJ, Smoke, and Flash. It was exactly the opposite on the track and I don't think you can lead multiple laps and be a half mile an hour slower than the two cars behind you.LOL

I hope they get that fixed. I see TP is free this weekend for those who may want to give it a try.
It's music to my ears to hear the whine of the engines on the track.
