"I know, but he seemed to gradually renounce certian aspects of socialism as time passed, had he lived a couple more decades, he would surely have been a full blown conservative!!"
I agree.
However, I disagree that 1984 was about communism. It was a warning. Awarning about the future of man and of Western Culture.
To: Irish_Thatcherite
LOL.
That'd make him want to phone home.

No more than Christopher Hitchens renounced his Marxism after the Soviet Union collapsed. The Right has a strange love affair with both men. If they understood what either of the two stand (or stood) for, they'd start looking for love in other places.

Well, to italicise stuff you still need to use html.
Otherwise you just type and hit 'return' to make a new line.

Communism was just the agent of the time. Orwell could accurately portray what he had not seen; that is, what the internal structure of the Soviet Union was like. Other intellectuals, like George Bernard Shaw, had made trips to the U.S.S.R., raving about how good things were upon return.
Oceania could be any totalitarian regime. Whoever controls the past controls the future. Sounds like liberal academia, doesn't it?

Yes.
I remember seeing threads where there were twenty posts or so in a row with nothing but 'Bold off', 'bold off', 'Bold OFF!', 'Why won't the %#!@ bold turn OFF?!'
And then there were tags to make things blink, and do marquee scrolling.
