*sigh* Upstate NY looks a lot like Vermont. It's very pretty here, but I do get homesick for the trees and rolling hills back home - and more snow.

It's a beautiful part of the country!

My girfriend and her husband heated exculsively with a wood burner and they have a regular furnance!

I have a roaring fire going in my wood burning fireplace tonight

I love a fire!

However a fire consumes a lot of wood

Good letter to "Snarlin' Arlen." I think Senator John Sununu brought up the Ben Franklin quote of liberty vs. security, but I think Old Ben would find wiggle room here when you consider that we live in a world where planes are deliberately sky-jacked and flown into buildings at 520 MPH, one cell phone call or pushing a switch that closes the contacts to a circuit that could trigger an ABC bomb (Atomic, Bacteriological, Chemical) weapon that could destroy a city or part of it or some rogue group can send an ICBM to anywhere in the world in 30 minutes or less.

Unless a pack of them get a deer or something cornered or caught.
No horror movie can duplicate the shrieks and howls. You have to hear it to "appreciate" it.
It will literally make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

12 Days Of A Redneck's Christmas Lyrics

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Some parts to a Mustang GT.

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Two huntin dogs and some parts to a Mustang GT.

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Four big mud tires, three shotgun shells, two huntin dogs, and some parts to a Mustang GT.

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Five flannel shirts, four big mud tires, three shotgun shells, two huntin dogs and some parts to a Mustang GT.

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Six cans of Spam, five flannel shirts, four big mud tires, three shotgun shells, two huntin dogs and some parts to a Mustang GT.

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Seven packs of Red Band, six cans of Spam, five flannel shirts, four big mud tires, three shotgun shells, two huntin dogs and some parts to a Mustang GT.

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Eight table dancers, seven packs of Red Band, six cans of Spam, five flannel shirts, four big mud tires, three shotgun shells, two huntin dogs, and some parts to a Mustang GT.

Heating Capacity: up to 2,800 sq. ft.

that's prety impressive but you need to run ducting to all the rooms of your house?

They didn't, for sure. Just have the chimney. I suppose you *could* run ducting, but it seems to work OK without.

Since heat rises and the bedrooms are upstairs, it gets the whole house pretty warm. I suppose it's not quite as even as a major heating system would be, but it's also a lot cheaper, especially over time.

I guess I'm just used to that kind of heat distribution. I never would have thought it needed ducting.

Well I just didn't know how it was supposed to heat so I asked!

My friends who heat with wood have a ranch

How many cords of wood would a 1600sq ft house use in a typical winter?

My parents have a regular furnace, too, but Mom gets after Dad because he runs that wood furnace plus the fireplace and she thinks they're going to die of heat exhaustion.

I don't blame her, I was back one day and WOW.

I can`t speak for a newer insulated one but that thing in the picture will take 12-15 cord/year.

I'm not good with square footage and all. I bet there are on-line calculators! Seems like Dad buys maybe two cords a year? Maybe two pickup truck loads a year. But I dunno exactly how big the house is. It's a two-story, four bedroom place.

I do know they use a LOT less wood and get more heat with the Quadra Fire. That thing is just amazing...it burns wood almost to nothing, and gets a ton of heat from even small amounts. It's fascinating to me. ;-)

Oh, a wood fire kicks out a lot of heat!

I guess actual furnaces probably work better than stoves for folks who aren't home as much, though. For us, there was always someone around to feed the fire or start a new one before the place got really cold.

And I dunno nuffin 'bout furnaces.

Really lovely and I agree with you, I can't imagine not having the woods to walk in
although for me I have to drive to the park

But its big, over 500 acres!

And I go, with my dog, every day
