Looks like she choked and missed the cut.
Actually, I could be wrong about that because the leader also bogeyed the last hole and if the 10 shot rule is in effect, Wie still makes the cut.
The 10 shot rule applies to the PGA in the US. I don't know if it applies in Japan.
She choked but may have backed in via the 10 shot rule which applies in the US.
I don't know if it applies in Japan.
Don't know either, but maybe they will give her a sponsor's exemption :0)
Does she have a long history of beating women tour pros?
She is 16 years old and still in high school.
She does not have a long history of anything really.
So, why all the attention?
KOCHI, Japan (AP) -- Michelle Wie bogeyed her final two holes Friday, missing the cut against the men at the Casio World Open.
Wie, who shot a 1-over 73 in the opening round, had three birdies and six bogeys at the Kochi Kuroshio Country Club course for a 3-over 75 and a 36-hole total of 4-over 148.
The top 60 players in the $1.7 million Japanese men's tour event made the cut.
The 16-year-old American is only the second woman to play in a Japanese men's event. Sophie Gustafson missed the cut in the 2003 Casio tournament.
She is 16, a girl, and can play with the guys.
What a pretty young lady.
And can make excuses with the best of them.
"Because of a backlog of players, Wie had to wait 40 minutes after her first nine holes. She then missed a couple of putts on Nos. 2 and 3 to go 3 over.
"I never had to wait like that before," Wie said. "I missed a couple of 4- or 5-foot putts that I should have made."
Well said. Wie's fame is built not on being a really good young player, because phenoms are a dime a dozen in any sport. No, she's famous for 1) being really hot at too young an age (which is not her fault), and 2) trying to become the "Jackie Robinson" of women's golf, which doesn't annoy me as long as she truly earns the mantle. But unlike Indy Car racer Danica Patrick (who had the fastest qualifying time in the 2005 Indy 500 and finished fourth), Wie doesn't seem to want to earn it; she wants it to be handed to her.
How many people are aware of the fact that despite the massive publicity Wie gets, she has never won a tournament against professional players? On the other hand, at the age of eighteen, Paula Creamer -- whom you may never have heard of -- did, and has won two LPGA events in her short career. She is second on the 2005 LPGA earnings list, trailing only Annika Sorenstam.
As I wrote in the post linked above, wake me when Wie wins a tournament against her own gender.
Uh huh. Say, how many women's tournaments has she won?
Does that mean men get to play for prize money in women's tournaments? It should open up a new source of income for teaching pros everywhere.
Get her off the men's circuit and stop this crap.
Blame her Korean slave driving father. He's the one who's pushing her so hard to bypass the womens tournaments and try to play on mans to rack up the endorsement deals.
Christ, I don't care how long she can drive a ball. She's only 16 and needs to gain more experience playing on a woman's tour first.
She can "play with the guys" because of sponsors' exemptions. She has missed the cut six times at mens tournaments and made the cut zero times.
But the tournament directors should stop giving her exemptions.
Look, there is no jealousy whatsoever. I hope Michelle Wie goes on to be the greatest woman golfer in the history of the sport. It would be great for women's golf. She's pretty and seems reasonably intelligent.
The issue is that her exemptions and playing in men's tournaments prevents a man from earning money as a professional in his sport. My point is why should it only work one way. I know there are a lot of club pros who could make the cut and make money on the women's tour.
Why should it only work one way in this era of supposed women's lib?
I can understand in a sport where there is no equivalent women's profession, but can't see it in golf.
Jealousy?
Damn right. 73/75 I'm jealous.
