I just heard a weatherperson say that the is clean side and a dirty side to a hurricane. What does that mean?

It's the side where the "punch" comes from. Rotation in the northern hemisphere is always counter clockwise. Mapwise, the horizontal coastline, LA,MS,AL, it would be the right side. In Texas, where the coast is vertical, it's the on the north.

The dirty, or wet, side has higher storm surge and more rainfall, than the clean, or dry, side because of the rotation.

Hope that helps, it's much easier to point at a map.

Morning all.

Qualifying draw is at 9am our time, so the lineup should be posted shortly after that. Qualifying follows like this:

Qualifying: 2 laps for positions 1-42 and 43 [past champ or fastest left] if open, Friday, September 23 at 3:10pm/et, TV-Speed Channel tape delay at 3:30pm/et, re-air at 8:00pm/et AND live via radio at MRN Radio and XM Satellite NASCAR Radio.

Impound? cars WILL NOT be impounded for this race after qualifying.

I'm off to help the evacuees again today so I won't be able to be here. It's been difficult knowing these folks have nowhere to go but the church or the Red Cross now. [we even have NASA and Exxon employees here. But at least I have my stash of information that I try to give out. Yesterday there were a few hotels that had a 'few' cancellations. There are others that need pet boarding and we have that taken care of as well. There are a ton of wonderful here. I have come to the conclusion that if you find yourself in trouble, Texas is the place who will help others.

Not one of the people I met yesterday was grouchy and they had been on the road as much as 10-11 hours!! And those were the lucky ones.

Sad news I just saw on the local news, half of a busload of elderly evacuees were killed in a fire on the way to Dallas.

Morning. I've been on the Rita threads (explains why I didn't get the entry lists done), but I should be back here in time for qualifying.

Thanks for holding down the fort today Steve!

I see East Texas may get about 25" of rain and this dang Rita may come back down for a second visit. Some of the folks may not be able to go back home now because of that.

excerpt from above post

---

Throughout the day, the drivers and executives visited wounded troops in the hospital wards and hosted a dinner and evening of entertainment for service members and their families.

"We live in a great country, and one reason is because of the armed forces," driver Terry Labonte said. "It is nice for us to be able to come here and in a very small way say thank you."

Joe Nemechek, driver of the U.S. Army No. 01 car, echoed this sentiment. "All the men and women in uniform who serve this country give us our freedom, and we shouldn't take that freedom for granted," he said. Army Staff Sgt. Justin Shellhammer, 26, who lost his left leg when he stepped on a land mine in Afghanistan on April 5 returned the appreciation. "It's awesome that the NASCAR guys have come out to support the men and women who got hurt. The support is important because it shows that what we're doing is not going unnoticed," he said. Army Staff Sgt. Troy Barns said the NASCAR visit was a good way to lift the "spirits of the guys in the hospital."

The drivers attending the dinner, at the Karen Wagner Sports Center on the Walter Reed campus included Labonte, Justin Labonte, Earnhardt, Nemechek, Jamie McMurray, Travis Kvapil, Martin Truex Jr., Ashton Lewis Jr., Carl Edwards and Jon Wood.

NASCAR executives in attendance were Brian France, NASCAR chairman and chief executive officer; Mike Helton, NASCAR president; Bill France Jr., NASCAR vice chairman; and Jim Hunter, NASCAR's vice president of corporate communications.

Busch qualifying already underway. Through 21 drivers, Truex has the pole.

Will be back on this thread shortly with the Cup order.

Tire notes - once again they're running D-6852 on the left (also used at California/Charlotte/Chicagoland/Kansas/Michigan/Kentucky)

Most of those are asphalt, and less abrasive, with a lot less banking. Will this mean a shorter window for pits due to tires? IIRC, a lot of dover races are won on fuel mileage.

I'm trying to recall the spring race where they used this setup.

Rocket to the front of Busch qualifying. We had a lenghty delay for either Tony Raines or Kevin Hamilin, but they're back running.
