They are doing it for performance, as would I, but I would also extend the concept of regenerative absorbtion into the engine compartment and the braking system.
I doubt that bolt-on components would get us where we want to go, but the new developments are "stunning."

"ripe"
not "rife"
rife (rìf) adjective
rifer, rifest
1. In widespread existence, practice, or use; increasingly prevalent.
2. Abundant or numerous. See Synonyms at prevailing.
[Middle English, from Old English rýfe.]
I think I was going for the "increasingly prevalent" need to change a gory subject.
However, ripe would have been more appropriate. I stand abashed. -- Is this corner okay?

DARPA gave me Q-Link.
Seriously, I wash my hands of water and hydrogen, and stick with good old fossil fuels. Everybody's hysterical and should shut up.

What about tinkering with a car that had a second fuel injection system, which would inject very small quantities of water for each combustion stroke, perhaps at the projected end of the combustion, so that the resultant steam vapor would provide additional expansion of vapor? Energy-wise, adding water to a combustion cylinder looks like "a wash," pun intended. If it is, the added mechanical complexity and corrosion issues are uncompensated. It figures to slow the release of energy down, but there are probably better ways to do that.

That's why I love this thread. People
think they're smart, practically everyone does and everyone you know thinks they're better than you are, and everyone is wrong.
People forget current history, for crying out loud! History is repeated constantly and it's a rare person who has an inkling of what time is, or ever was.

NNB and I aren't hysterical (except, no and then, in the funny sense of the word)
I see no reason NOT to look into alternate fuel sources periodically, as tech advances.
otoh, i see no reason to run around screaming about falling skies, either ;)

I didn't use that word. It's obviously conceivable, but so is free energy. Unlike free energy, injecting water is even doable. I'm just not sure it's worth doing.

I wonder if you are stuned by a beeber-like device, are you put into a stupor for a cheeseloving sister biting moose to proclaim loudly: "All your stupid are belong to us," whilst he steals your internet connection to search for war cheats?

"I didn't use that word." Cheap shot on my part.
"I'm just not sure it's worth doing."
The conventional wisdom would say, "No, we've tried that, and it didn't work."
I'm suggesting we look at all the systems together, and find a way to recover the energy of the heat that is thrown away in the radiator.
At the very least, a system which allowed some heat storage during close-haul trips could be coupled to housing units, to distribute "free heat" into the house after you run down to the store for milk, bread, and eggs.
The current "energy crisis" is not the shortage of the seventies. This one is for the long haul, and we have to put our thinking caps on. It would be stupid not to.
