I agree..but the Cards are a different situation ( and I'm pinging SCALEMAN on this for his input..Cards players sign there because they want to stay there..they're going for long-term deals early, before free-agency, and at below market rates...look at Pujols, Edmonds..so they have the luxury of thinking 2-3-4 years into the future..The AL, especially Boston, is driven by Steinbrenner, and he wants ONE MORE WS before he retire and hands over the team...so he'll do everything for today..and screw the future..he can also afford to ignore payroll considerations..becuase now that they have the deal for the new stadium..which the Yankees are paying for themselves..they have NO luxury tax worries...becuase they get to offset the cost of the stadium against any luxury tax they owe..So this year, I predict they don't make the playoffs..and the Boss goes nuts, and buys up everything to try and win one more next year. Ironically, the free-agent class this off season is the worst in years..

You are correct in that. A whole lot of Cardinal players have turned down larger, longer contracts just to play here. Add Larry Walker and Scott Rollen to that mix and then throw in McGuire. All were acquired under market.

The Cardinals did take a great chance with Carpenter last year, they disabled him and allowed him to recover from the surgery rather than ruining his arm as opposed to the Cubs management practices.

Look at Dusty Baker and the Cubs record with their "ACE". Every year they overpitch him and he is of no use to them at all. Now they finally realize that he probably can't throw that many pitches and are probably going to use him in relief or as a closer.

I probably agree with the Yankees/Steinbrenner thing, and its possible that the RS are mortgaging the future for immediate gratification, but I see it backfiring. But if the RS make the WS even if they don't win, the fans will forgive and forget, but management had better have a plan to make them competetive next year or the fans will turn on them like rabid dogs.

Grady Sizemore stealing home? That's neat. And Hafner's having a great year. Too bad you don't have any more games against the Yanks.

Yet another depressing Red Sox game so far. We'll be at Fenway again tomorrow... anyone in particular you'd like us to boo? :-(

Oh goody... Mike Remlinger is pitching now...

And Alan Embree was the Yanks' winning pitcher today! LOL

Red Sox now leading the Yankees by only one and a half games... :-(

Ridiculous. Totally ridiculous. Worst bullpen in perhaps all of baseball. Bipolar starting pitching.

Wow. Where to start? I guess cheer Graffanino who busts his ass and feel free to boo everyone else when the mood strikes.

Graffanino is such a refreshing addition to this team, isn't he? He really busts his ass for the Red Sox. We'll give him an extra big cheer tomorrow (assuming he'll be in... could be Cora).

Bipolar starting pitching.

Lets hope David Wells is finally feeling better tomorrow. Seems like he's had this "virus" for several weeks now...

You can just aim your boo's toward the entire red sox bull pen. I can not believe remlinger is still here.
regarding the 1 1/2 game lead. its the sox's fault. losing two to kansas city and blowing a six run lead last night. is inexcusable. I do not think it is a good idea to have such a small lead heading into September. with Schill still very questionable.

That said. Did you actually think our Red Sox would make it easy on us?

I went to Friday’s game, and I booed Millar. If you could continue booing for me, that would be great. Also Remlinger if he pitches. Thankfully, he didn’t pitch on Friday, so I didn’t get to boo him.

At the game, we sat next to the Tigers bullpen, and I got Pudge Rodriguez’s autograph; it definitely made up for the fact that the bullpen wall obstructed our view of center and left field.

Enjoy the game!

Not the best idea. But better than trailing, I would venture.

As if the Sox would stop being schizoid just 'cause they won the Series! ;) The division title is likely to be decided by the remaining Sox-Yankees matchups. More stress, more drama, more material for the CHB to spew in the Globe. In other words, FUN!

Wells gave us a quality start and we gave him plenty of run support. We are a good enough team to have every other game at least be this breezy.

I'm in mourning. The Remlinger era is over. So sad...

Cards 6 Nats 0

(2 shut outs in a row)

Dodgers 1 Stros 0

Magic # = 19

Wild Card -- Philllies, Florida (1), Mets (2), Stros (2)
Stros are in a tail spin, Phillies and Marlins gonna make it a fight, Mets and Stros might get hot but don't bank on it.

Great game yesterday. And - GraniteStateConservative - Sunday was "New Hampshire Day" at Fenway. :o)

Hubby and I luckily managed to find two empty field box seats just above the visitor dugout, so we had a rare glimpse of the players up close for the entire game. (Our actual *cheap* seats were high up in the left-field grandstand - seats not together, view probably obstructed, and in the "no alchohol" section.)

The Sox all seemed to be in a great mood yesterday, even when they started off behind the Tigers. Manny and Big Papi (David Ortiz) seemed to be in particularly good spirits, the two of them teasing each other, especially toward the end of the game when Manny was on 2nd and Ortiz was on 3rd. Manny was relentlessly teasing Papi that he'd never be able to run to home in time... LOL.

Bill Mueller put on an awesome show yesterday, both on the field and at bat. Wells looked very good and it was interesting to watch rookie Abe Alvarez pitch the final inning of the game.

Still, I'm worried that the Red Sox are only 1.5 games behind the Yankees. I just knew the Yanks would sweep the KC Royals... why couldn't we? :-(
