No, I wasn't hurt a bit. I just really wanted to end the work out on a good note, and at first I wanted that for MY sake. But it took me awhile to figure out, HE was more scared then I. I've never had a horse act scared like that. Now I'm going to worry more about him being spooky at that spot, and not that I'm afraid of coming off again, never came close once I got my stirrups right, I just hope I haven't screwed him up bad, and for good. What do you think? What would you do to get him over it? The best thing would have been for me to work it slowly a few times and then stop, but knowing me and how I fret about stuff, I needed a good run thru to keep me mentally sound about the whole thing.

It was scary for him I'm sure... and depending on the temper of the person who first broke him, he may have thought he was in terrible trouble for dumping you. That's the way my pony is. When she used to dump Jesse, she'd shake like a leaf in fear so you could barely approach her.
I bet he'll get over it with steady repetition without more mishaps. It was just an adrenaline rush for him, and too much stress to be over it today.
That's pretty much what I was thinking. Just make the next couple of times pleasant and easy.
Always something tho.....
I've never had a horse act scared after it dumped me. Made me feel more bad for him them me.

I was just watching my local fox news station and they showed video footage of a model riding a horse across a catwalk during a fashion show. The horse fell off the catwalk! Neither model nor horse was hurt but it was a horrible looking accident. I did a google search but I couldn't find anything. It said it was Reuters video when they were showing it.
Oh, my....

Try to behave yourself, ok? Stay on the saddle club thread if you feel some silliness coming on.
Well, I've seen people come off and beat the crap out of the horse... out of fear and loss of temper. Sometimes the horse was actually acting up to bring it on, but it's often counterproductive to just take their anger out on him. They're just punishing the horse for letting himself be caught again.
He's a good horse, and he just didn't understand what happened, probably thought he might be in trouble.
Any way to run the barrels in a different order, or move the barrels so it ~isn't~ the same spot of ground? Or just lope through and around the area on random paths without mishap. You never know which things are keyed in his mind that brought it on, and you could just change a few variables and see if it helps. Perhaps also work with him getting your foot in and out of stirrups in a controlled environment so that doesn't surprise him.
Wow - I'll look for it.
I've been looking, I can't find it.
You know the funny thing was, even with me hanging off the side, he tried to make the second barrel turn....
He really is a good boy, and I feel bad for scaring him. It wasn't his fault at all. He's not a real people horse like Rusty. He can take pats or leave them. So I just don't know how to reassure him that he's not in trouble.
You know, even if a horse is trying to get you off, and you do come off, beating them is not the fix...I'd never do that. I feel bad just for making him keep doing it. But in the end that might help. I just won't know till tomorrow. I'm going to make sure tomorrow is smooth, easy and enjoyable.

Find anything yet? I can't find a thing.
I hate falling off, it destroys my confidence. I wouldn't hit the horse afterwards, either. When Juma bucked me off I just got up, dusted myself off and forced myself to get back on.
No - in the end going back and doing it again till he got better was the right thing.
If you'd quit, he might just sit and wonder "OK - I did something wrong in the second turn and she jabbed me and yanked the reins and there was a lot of shouting "woah" and I just don't know what I did."
Who knows how much thinking they really do, but I think you are way better off for not ending on that note, and for confusing him in the positive... He was wondering if it was going to happen again and it didn't. And then again and it didn't. So he's on his way to not thinking it's always gonna happen. By next time maybe he won't be thinking about it any more.
I always feel guilty when I cause the problem, but they are luckily pretty forgiving creatures.
Next time, PICTURES!
She'll probably be poking at you with a pointy stick.
Been watching the news but haven't seen it yet.
I think we are going out when ecurbh gets home... Going somewhere air conditioned. It's 91 degrees and I am SOOOO heat intolerant. I'm best at 50 degrees :~D
Falling off because the horse did something and I don't know why destroys my confidence. If I know why the horse did what ever it did that caused the fall, it doesn't bother me so much. That's why with my mare, I finally had to give up on her. I could never figure it out.
About 2 years ago Rusty dumped me, and I got hurt pretty good, But it never really botherd me because I knew what happened and why. Some deer jumped up right under us when we were long trotting down a trail. Heck they startled me. I could very well blame him for spinning away. We had so much forward motion going that I just couldn't stay with him.
I did slow down for a while when going past that spot, but it never made me afraid to ride him.

I did see that footage of the horse on the catwalk. Looks pretty scary indeed.
We're out of here... going somewhere cool for a few hours.
