...lost 2 foals this year, lost another one AND the mare today. They have only gotten one live one out of 4, so far...

Boy! That's really bad! I sure hope she finds out what's going on before the other two come along.

Well, my camera uses it's own kind of rechargeable battery, so that's news to me too.... 3-4 pics per battery is certainly not acceptable.

Glad you got it figured out.

Well, that does make it sound like it isn't necessarily a defect in their diet, vaccinations or care then... except perhaps for not being there when the last mare was foaling. When that many had problems, I thought maybe it was disease or diet.

Just came in from finishing up the weedwacking.

I put the horses in the back forty... was gonna leave them there for awhile because it's shadier in the heat, but it's awfully lush back there... And look at Bay.

The back forty sure looks nice. Have you ever thought about spraying around under the fenceline with Roundup? It'd sure cut down on all that weedwhacking.

I've thought about poisons for various things, even bought them, but I've always been leery of using them in any kind of widespread way. I'd have to poison about a six-foot wide strip, because that canary grass is so tall, if I don't cut it wide enough it just falls in toward the cut and gets in the fence anyway.

RoundUp is pretty good as poisons go. It only kills what you spray it on. It's not "ground active". But it doesn't kill as fast as they say it does on TV. It takes about a week for the weeds to turn brown, but when they are dead, they are DEAD. With regular application you'll just have a dirt strip there that you can just spot treat occasionally. I use it around my driveway, flower beds, storage building and gravel areas.

That fly mask with the face is hilarious. Wonder where they got that?

There is another one made by Spectricide that works as good as Roundup, but much faster, and it's MUCH cheaper. Either use the spray bottle, or in larger quantities, wet an old mop with it and drag it along the fence line. It will kill whatever it touches in about 24 hours.

Today would have been a good day to be taking pictures here too:). I hit the ground again. I do think tho, this was the most graceful fall I've ever taken, and it didn't hurt a bit. First time I have ever come off in an arena.

Thanks - I'll think about that one of these times I'd rather be doing something else besides weedwacking!

It only really takes a long time when I've let it go all year like this. Much of that tall grass really doesn't like being cut short and buzzing it all the way to the ground weakens if from coming back very fast.

LOL.

Well, I was warming up the horse. The girls were going to watch me make a run. Mack called and I had to run in to check the radar for him, so Jenny got on the horse to keep him moving while I looked at the radar and talked to Mack.

When I got back out there, her and Kristy were talking about stirrup length. They thought I might should shorten my stirrups a bit. That you could hold on better with shorter stirrups. I said I would but not today, as I didn't want to change anything till they had seen us make our run. Well I loped a few more circles then decided I'd go ahead and shorten them one hole. I loped a few more circles and was thinking I felt like I was pushing myself out of the saddle more then sitting in it, but I went ahead and tried a run. I made the first turn, and lost a stirrup. In trying to get it back before I got to the next barrel, I think I got him with a spur and he zagged, I lost my balance and pulled him the other way so he zigged back, and I came off. I hung off of the side for a good long while tho:). so I wasn't that far up before I hit.

I really feel bad for him tho. I think it really scared him. When I walked over to him he was trembling. I know me tho, and I really needed to go ahead and make a run immediatly. But he was spooked. Like I've said he's real light mouthed and sided, so my flopping around on the poor guy didn't do him any good.

It took me about 5 tries to get him thro the pattern good enough to quit. He kept spooking, zig zaggin in that same spot, I guess anticipating me jerking on him. How do you tell them you didn't mean to do that.

We finally got one done. Tomorrow, I'm going to work him slow and easy for just a short while. He'll be off Sunday, then that long trail ride Mon. and probably be off Tues to give him a day to get over the ride. So hopefully after tomorrow's calm easy work out on the barrels, by next Wed. he'll be over the fright I gave him.

Oh, I put my stirrups back where they were, and that's were they are going to stay. The girls figured out I ride with more weight in my heels then they do, so where my stirrups are is right for me. I think Jenny really felt bad but it was my mistake, I should have left it alone like I had first decided.

Your grass does look nice. That bull dozing you did last year really did the trick didn't it.

Oh dear! I'm glad you weren't hurt.

It's a little desperate and comical, when you are hangin' on for dear life, when there's no changing the ending and everyone watching knows it, and you know it too.

It sure did... we've got good forage back there now, where before it was so thick they couldn't even get through
