That IS weird about Dusty's sire and dam both being leopards with no roan but yet she's roan. They must've both had some recessive roan in there somewhere.

You were talking about Dusty's roaning leaving spots and I was wondering if that's really what they are. I've noticed that when roans get a cut or scrape, the hair on that spot grows back solid, not roan. Could these spots be bug bites or something? Blade's got several spots on him where he's had boo-boos.

No, no injuries or bites. This type of roaning is common in appaloosas, it's a variation of the leopard pattern I think because it happens in solid horses carrying the leopard pattern gene.

In other words, some gene that Dusty inherited suppressed the leopard pattern in her. I'll try to get a good picture of her too so that you can see what it looks like.

Frog: Rusty is a roan, and I've noticed anywhere he gets a scrape it comes back solid. He's had lots of scrapes too.

I got my cement blocks to raise my cavalettis. I going out to try them now.

Okay, pictures of Tuffy - he's a month old now, of Speed, check out the ears :), I don't think you can see it but she has black socks (?) and a picture of Dusty's roaning. If you look closely, she has red spots, white spots and not showing - a couple of black spots and a dun spot.

It's sleeting here now, snowing on the mountain tops :( I hate winter.

That's the only thing I don't like about roans. The older they get, the more dark spots they get coz we all know how horses are an accident waiting to happen.

I think Tuffy is growing up beautifully.

I noticed those ears on the filly in one of the earlier pictures! They're pointing in like Arab ears, but not exactly... it makes her look like an exotic cat or something... I haven't been able to put my finger on what they remind me of.

She has a snip of white on her nose that I didn't notice before.

Do the scars catch up with the roan in the next coat change? Cyn's scratch came back darker, but I keep thinking it'll even out on the next coat change.

I wish you could take pics over the cavelettis!

I was out cleaning stalls, and the county guy came by to inspect for the septic design, and then my horse-shoer showed up, so I ended up out of the house a long time!

There's some breed of horse from the far east I think that has ears that turn in like that. Beats me where they came from. :) Her color is different every time I walk out to the barn.

Tuffy sure is a pretty thing! And Speed, I love those little hooked ears! I see what you mean about Dusty's spots. It's interesting that it took them that long to start showing up.

Winter! Whaddya mean Winter! It's Spring! We got Dogwoods, Redbuds, and azaleas blooming. It's Gawgeous! (when it ain't rainin')

Nope. They'll always be that way. Now Cyn's boo-boo will even back out, probably with her summer hair like you said. I don't know what it is about roans that makes it that way. I sure don't like it, but I guess I'd better get used to it. Either that or wrap my horses in bubble wrap. ;o)

Hooked ears like that are fairly common and highly desirable in the gaited horse world. I don't know why, unless that maybe it makes them look "keener" or more intelligent, like they've got their ears pricked up all the time. Whatever it is, I like it.

I promise to get a camera real soon. I'm taking mine in for sure Sat. depending on that, rather I get it fixed or a new one.

I started out with the boards across the top of the blocks, but he knocked everyone over:), so I lowered them to the top hole in the block and he did that fine. Still bumped them once in awhile but they didn't fall over. I could tell it was more of a job for him then the ground poles.

I'll do this next week then move to doing some hill work too. But I'm going to do the cavalettis will all of them everytime I ride.

Duchess, your new one is pretty. Tuffy is really looking good. I like him

HHHMMMM, I had something I wanted to say, now I can't remember:).....

Oh OK, our redbuds are already done for the year. They don't last long. My creeping phlox is still blooming, and the rest of the garden is just so far sitting there waiting for more sun I guess.

Oh - he's one of those! Like my stallion! He wouldn't stretch to step over anything that he could knock down with less trouble ;~D.

Dusty shedds out each year with more roaning and more spots :)

I don't know if Speed's ears will stay like that or if it is just because of how she was laying in the womb. Maybe this is the year for odd ears - Tuffy's have white tips.
