The dark area is supposed to be liquid, gone, missing
Is there someone on here who really knows how to read this thing?

I'm not a radiologist but I'd recognize a "dark area" like that, anywhere.

I have one just like it where my frontal lobe used to be...i.e. "gone", "missing", "pining for the fjords", etc etc etc.

[and damn if I'm not still here annoying people who say this "proves" she's "brain dead"]....;)

Thanks for nothing then.

I am not a radiologist but know enough to know the ventricles are huge. You see that when brain tissue is atrophied. You see it in old people and some others who have had brain disease. The good thing is you can function with not alot of brain.

We need a radiologist to tell us any more.

Are you, by any chance, a Norwegian blue? :)

Thanks, I understand you are not a radiologist. Do you have experience reading these?

We all have ventricles, sort of cavenous like spaces filled with spinal fluid in the middle of the brain. They enlarge as brain tissue is lost or if there is a blockage and they fill up,,hydrocephalus. You have seen babies with big heads, or used to, now they shunt the fluid off and the babies heads don't get huge. Big ventricles occur as we age. Other conditions cause them. I can't tell much about the cortex but it looks small to me but not gone. Just smaller. If you have a stroke, one part will get small. This looks just generally smaller but there is a cortex. It isn't all gone.

IIRC, one of you is a radiologist. Can you offer any opinion from one slice of Terri Schiavo's CT scan?

No neurologist in his right mind is going to tell you what that large back spot of fluid is in the center...and what it means.

He'd be run out of here on a rail.

I've been to a medical edu. blog where this was discussed and lurked.

I'll see if I can find the link in my history.

Any particular reason you're kicking someone who is trying to prove that Terri must NOT be killed?

If you mean the butterfly shaped area in the middle, that is the lateral ventricles and every radiologist knows that. It is a normal space, filled with fluid, gotten much larger than normal.

Thanks for the info. An MRI would show more.

Of course, she still has that experimental brain stimulator in her head so unless someone knows exactly what they were looking at.........

Ah! But whilst flying away, do you know how not to be seen?

I went to school with a hydrocephalic boy who was also a dwarf.

His head was -huge- and he graduated at the top of his class and was always on the honor roll.

Apparently the brain can always find another way....:)
