And I am willing to be there is no such thing as rolling that one back.

yes, you can remove it and restore original config.

Did Howlin just install sp2 and then have problems? SP2 does cause problems.

I don't know, I have been spending all my time working with Linux, Xandros, find it easier than chasing strange XP problems..... and searching for the latest piece of malware....

"Okay....put the CD Dell sent me with Reinstallation CD MS Windows XP Professional in one of the CD drives and reboot?"

Yes, I would boot from the XP Pro (Dell) reinstall disc. I had this EXACT same problem with my E: (burner) drive a couple months back.

It is still possible. I have seen CD rom drives fail and cause a yellow exclamation point or "CD ROM DRIVE IS NOT ACCESSABLE" error in win98. The first is very rare, but I have seen it. I admit to not being well versed in XP. But I think you are all on the right track about using the Install disk. I Imagine that DEll would have some kind of warning message before it started writing to the hard drive. They have to assume that someone is going try the CD even if they have no reason to.

yes, a selection screen pops up and gives you some options before it does anything.

OK. It may very well be something that happened at windows update, especially if the update did not finish or Howlin elected to install updated drivers. Updated drivers from Microsoft often cause problems which is why I only update my drivers from the original Hardware Vendor.

OK, someone with a Dell might be more useful than the rest of us.

Yep, problems with SP2... especially if you're using SBC Yahoo! I initially had problems getting SP2 to "take," but uninstalled and reinstalled THREE TIMES and the third time was the charm. Shouldn't have to be that difficult, of course, but it was, unfortunately.

Go to Device Manager. Assuming you have a DVD Rom Drive, right click on properties and be sure it says REGION 1 which is the US. My hubby's got altered and had same problem you seem to be having.

I am not sure how long ago she installed it. I gathered from comments here that it was pretty recently.
