He's right down the street, too. Looked at a house at Silverstrand last night. Daughter and I are sick to DEATH of no beach. There's one place we saw, 1 bedroom aprtment downstairs with private entrance, three b/r upstairs, big deck, block from the beach, loft, BUT...get this.... $2600 per month. ouch. SOoooo... tonight we're looking at a 2 bedroom cottage. More our size. Must allow 54832 animals.

What was the PURPOSE of a dog trot?

Crawdads.... *whimper*... Can you imagine how many crawdads I get here in California? Once a year at the cajun festival.

When a barn or cabin needed to be larger than sixteen feet by sixteen feet, pioneers built a series of small rooms and joined them under the same roof. One of the most common arrangements was the "Dog-trot." It was two log rooms, really two separate cabins, connected by a roof. The space between them was an open porch.
This type of cabin became popular throughout the south. Dogs and their masters found that the open bay, between two long flat walls, acted as a funnel for cooling breezes. The exact same configuration, a covered, open space between a home and a barn or garage, is the common "breezeway" of New England and Midwest country homes.

Breeze way to sit on during summer evenings. Usually every room had a door and a window that opened into the dog trot. Permitting good air ciculation. The dogs liked to sleep there too.

Interesting design idea. Maybe the reason it went by the wayside is for security reasons. Can't get to your kids as easily or as fast if intruders are between the two cabins... It would definitely keep the two rooms cool, though.
My daughter saw a HGTV show last night that had the daughter's bed suspended from the ceiling. Now she's all hyped up to string her bed up. Wait till I tell the boyfriend about THIS new project.

I'll be darned. I'm the daughter of an AF colonel and have been in every state save Alaska, and don't remember ever seeing that type of construction.

Lu would only like it if she had a cozy loveseat to snuggle up on.

Very common here. Many old houses have the dogtrot enclosed now. I could take you around and show you dozens.
