TREMENDOUS DOC, ROB,
VERY, VERY WELL DONE.
THANKS TONS FOR MANY PEOPLE. Thank God, have never had even a slight drinking problem. May dring 3-4 or so glasses of wine a YEAR. Can't find a low alcohol, fruity wine I like. Would drink a glass a day if I found one I could afford. Asti Spumanti is not affordable!
Anyway--worked in alcohol counseling and it's a dreadful problem. You said it all very well.
Want to help bump this over the next week.
Blessings,

Thank you Rob for giving this valuable life lesson a hearing. I, too, believe that a person has to quit for their own sake. I like the way you did it--with Rush "in spirit". Very clever. AA will say you'll always have the desire to drink. I wonder if you would disagree?

Anyone who thinks alcohol is the life of the party; necessary for fun and interesting socializing . . .
Go into most any bar
and drink only a coke--NO alcohol--and listen to the conversations around you.
They tend to be insispid, inane, full of self-pity or other nonsense etc.
Alcohol is a depressant.
It loosens the inhibitions and gives the ILLUSION of fun.
Any video tape of acting out under the influence will tend to show that the 'fun' is anything but.
. . . that is from a truly sane perspective.
Other soused partners will agree that alcohol is the life of the party.

God Bless you Rob. I've vicariously lived through the nightmare of alcoholism with my brother. Although you were more of a functional alcoholic, the dependency on a stupid bottle is scary for anybody. It's great to share. You are helping others. Communication is the anti drug.

To my dear fellow FReepers that are still struggling with this problem, but are now contemplating giving it up. Yes, it is the best decision you will make in your life, BUT, it can also be one of the deadliest. Alcoholism is the most dangerous addiction for detoxification...it can, and does, kill. Yes, it is more dangerous than any narcotic. If you are strongly leaning towards taking this big step to sobriety, please, please, please, check yourself into a hospital or detox center for at least a couple of days so that you may be monitored. I hate the thought of losing any FReepers to this.

One thing...its the people around you that matter. You always need good friends.
I don't drink (I'm mormon) nor am I tempted to drink, but when I go to events or some social gatherings inevitably I run across people who think is 'strange' that I don't drink.
Its essentially social pressure.
Of course I tell them to go to **** (or at least think it), but there is a point to be made...
All the people who read this should be careful about how they treat others, even unintentionally. Accept people for who they are. It can make all the difference in the world for someone who may be struggling.
