Actually, this is the best trick ever:

I'd about given up on Firefox. I'm finally convinced that whoever runs the show doesn't know what he/they are doing, considering every change means your extensions and themes are useless, and that themes and extensions are spread all over the place.

You wanna use an extension designed for 0.8 in the 1.0 browser? Type about:config in the address bar and then find extensions:lastapp version and change the value.

This isn't perfect. A couple of extensions might not show in the list, for instance, but it's better than nothing.

The fact that you can do this is why I say the Mozilla folks don't know what they're doing. It makes no sense to break every previous theme or extension, and it doesn't bring in the Moms and Pops looking for something better. it'll stay in the realm of geekdom until they get their heads out of their....

You can run both. Unlike IE on Windows, Firefox doesn't have tentacles into the operation system. BTW, Thunderbird, the email counterpart to Firefox, is a really good program, too, in case you'd like to get away from Outlook Express.

What you've got to remember is that up until the release of version 1.0, those were beta releases, and there are bound to be a lot of changes when things are still not final.

Yeah, but still, every change meant likely breaking the themes and extensions, (and considering the trick I posted, it made no sense).

Are they going to be smart enough and leave it alone, now that it's reached "official" status? Judging from their past record, I doubt it.

One of the best features of FireFox I like is the Mouse Gestures plugin by Optimox
You can customize it to load any website you want with a simple mouse movement.
I get FreeRepublic by a downward motion to the left - /

It took me awhile but I found the code to edit the mappings

- Click on Extensions
- Mouse Gestures
- Options
- Edit Mappings
- Choose Browser
- New
- For Function Type - choose Custom
- Type something in Appearance for the mapping name- ie FreeRepublic
- Copy this to the Custom JavaScript code . . .

loadURI("http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/browse?ao=1");

Click recognize and make the mouse movement you want to use
Then save it.

You can put any web address between the quotation marks in the loadULI code and
assign a mapping to it.
Makes for much faster browsing.
