Good morning folks. I need to catch up on this thread, sweetliberty what neck of the woods has nativity scenes at courthouses? Sounds like my kind of place!

Several days ago we had lunch at a little place that had a Merry Christmas sign up and real carols playing over the speakers. I called the diner and told a manager how much I appreciated those things and that I was certain that if I felt that way there were others also did. She was appreciative of the call and promised to pass my compliment on to the owners.

After this Christmas season I'm done shopping at Target. Not only due to their poor decision about banning the Salvation Army kettles but those commercials of theirs features that Three Dog Night (I think) song
Joy to the world" as something appropriate for Christmas.
I need to write their corporate offices about my displeasure.

Good morning Prairie :) I keep wondering why more of us aren't calling in to protest the "Happy Holidays" thing. I mean, it's not like they have to say Merry Christmas each and every single time, but at least occasionally would be good, honestly. I heard a caller on a talk show say the other day "Which other birthday would we be celebrating where we didn't even mention the person's name?"

I detest Target too. Here because they ruined a scenic corridor and bike trail we all enjoyed and built their mega-store in the middle of a residential area. There are so many empty corners around here they could have used within a quarter mile. Their corporate people were arrogant as heck in every meeting I attended. I managed to boycott them for three years during that time. But I dislike Wal-Mart, Walgreen's, and K-Mart also, so... dunno where to go for basics. Can't make my own cheap plastic trinkets :)

Mornin' BQ. It's ridiculous isn't it. We end up diminishing everybody's holiday by obscuring and deleting the meaning and identity.

That's a shame about where Target put their store in your area. Aren't they actually ultimately owned by some French organization? I thought I heard that. The "Jeremiah was a bullfrog, Joy to the world" commercials just infuriate me.

Well, we have a Christmas party. Two of them, actually. The one we had for the foster kids and foster parents, and the one we have in the office next week. Our office also has a door decorating contest. Several are done with the nativity and Christian references. In this area, people honor Christ and go to church. It is easy to spot the caseworkers and investigators offices. We have the doors that aren't decorated. Nobody has time. Our combined workload has about tripled in the past 2 weeks, but no new staff to take up any of the slack. One of the investigators has 50 new reports which have to initiated within 72 hours of the report. She's having to work all weekend, and she isn't even on call.

Well, I refuse to be a part of it. If I say anything at all, it is Merry Christmas. I have never had that met with a negative response. I think workers are indoctrinated into the "holiday" thing. Everybody is so scared of being sued for some silly, bogus offense that they're scared to even be human any more. Well, I draw the line at neutering Christ. It's time we neuter the ACLU.

That 'splains it then. There's nothing like living in the heartland. Mr. Prairie and I hope to be able to move out of Crook Co. IL in the next few years, in fact he's looking at Realtor.com listings right now, LOL!

We just aren't there quite yet as daughter is still in college. But hopefully.....soon.....

Here's a link to some interesting stats for anybody who is still Christmas shopping. In fact, I just got this in my email as we were having this discussion.

Wow, I haven't heard that commercial. I am so used to throwing the remote at the tv when I hear their commercials. But, I have to go there this morning to buy two gift certificates for my MIL and SIL and also some laundry detergent. So, I am being a hypocrite for now. I'm making sure to give double to the Salvation Army every other time I see them.

p.s. The scenic corridor leads to Saguaro National Park. Target refused to compromise or move their location. They clear-cut a beautiful desert corner when like I said, they easily, easily could have used an already paved over area nearby. I guess it doesn't really make much difference now - the rate the desert is being paved over and all the illegals ruining it too. I keep wondering how long they expect our water supply to hold out.

Now that you mention it, that does sound familiar. Lovely.

Wow, that link is very interesting - thank you so much. Good, I can keep shopping at K-Mart and Macy's - we don't have a Saks here.

Was out on a horrific mind bender and woke up on a windowbox seat..
So someone's gonna have to fill me in.

You might consider this area. The 4-season climate is as near perfect as I've ever seen, it is a beautiful area and the cost of living is relatively low. There is an abundance of lovely and spacious properties and lots and lots of water. Check into the Baxter and Marion county areas. If you get over as far as Boone County, you're into some white supremacist territory. Any farthur to the west, and you're getting into north Mexico. Tyson brings in countless illegals that settle in the Springdale/Fayetteville area. Go too far to the east, and you get into the delta poverty belt (read: liberalland).

We're not too close to any big city, but accessible to one in every direction (2-2 1/2 hours). There is Little Rock to the south, Fayetteville to the west, Memphis to the east and Springfield to the north. I have talked with several people who came here to visit and fell in love with it and stayed...or came back, and a couple of people who ran across it by accident (browsing real estate ads) and decided to check into it and this is where they ended up.

We have our share of dysfunctional people and democrats (is there a difference?), as my other posts are testament to, but I prefer to think of them as local color, rather than public liability. It's pretty homogenous here though, so if you're big on the diversity thing, you would probably not like it. :-)

"I am so used to throwing the remote at the tv when I hear their commercials."

That is what the mute button is for, and I have made liberal use of it since its inception. It has kept my life blissfully free of extraneous noise. I get enough of that from the news. Plus, when anybody says to me, "you know that commercial about so and so?" I can honestly say, "nope."
