Yeah, that`s another thing my brother was telling me that I might have a virus. I have NO virus software whatsoever. I hope it isn`t a virus
I've never used it, but you should save your recent files on a disc and give it a shot
Sorry try 28 first. You should still run adaware or spybot.
You should get Spy Sweeper, too. I was FLOORED by it.....I found 52!
Where can I get it?
WHAAAAAAT?????? no Virus Scanner??
well, heck, you might as well put up a big sign. As soon as you get the thing taken care of, get a virus detector ASAP. YOu can get some for free or get a trial until you can buy one.
I don`t know WHAT it was! All I know is they had this little icon in the corner and I clicked it and it said installing updates and then asked me to reboot and from there it`s been a nightmare! Freggin` Bill Gates! Leave my freggin` computer ALONE! It was working fantastic and they totally screwed it up again.
Yet, if you have your data backed up, my two cents is that you ZAP! your hard disk drive and re-install Windows XP.
Also, install ZoneAlarm Pro and learn how to use and maintain it.
DO NOT install Windows XP Service Pack 2 until some more time goes by (probably a couple more months) in which more of the bugs may be discovered and ironed out by Microsoft.
Use Firefox or Mozilla as your Internet browser. Use Thunderbird as your e-mail client. Use only Norton Disk Doctor, Norton WinDoctor, and Norton Anti-Virus, but you really don't need the other features, though they may be installed.
Update your anti-virus definitions files every day, and run Norton WinDoctor every day.
Through the day, patrol your ZoneAlarm Pro settings.
NEVER use Microsoft Internet Explorer for anything other than updating from Microsoft's Windows Update website.
When you get your PC going again, add some extra users; at least two with admin powers, so to speak.
When a Windows PC acts up, one of the easiest and quickest diagnostic routines, is to simply start up as another user, let's say, UserB. If the troubles go away, then you may suspect that UserA's preferences are closely tied to, if not the cause of, the PC's troubles.
Just my humble opinion.
Also, don't overlook Windows XP support options Other users and technicians contribute to database of problems from all over the internet.
Tech Tv forums is another group of helpful people. There are many others, but these three are a good starting place.
In know how frustrating it is. But what seems major can sometimes be quite straightforward to fix, once you know what the problem is. And it seems that a lot of people devote many hours of personal time trying to help others overcome their computer problems. Good luck!
What is the meaning of "horked?"
Yeah, that is nuts isn`t it? And i usually have my comp connected to the net all the time even when im not using it.
YUP, thats exactly what it was. XP Service Pack 2. I ain't clicking on that icon!!
I would re-install XP after removing any spyware or other non-essential memory resident programs. Hit control+alt+delete (ONLY ONCE) to see what programs are running in memory, write them down, search them on GOOGLE to identify the program running so it will help you remove unwanted programs.
I suspect you have blown some Windows files for any number of reasons - by re-installing the OS will repair many of these damaged files. Also remind yourself that re-formatting is a last resort. A real last resort. If you can achieve any sort of boot your problem is fixable.
I had an experience similar to what you describe. On both occasions I had to set 0's to my hard disk, wipe it out and reload everything. I was using Windows NT4 Ver 6.0! Ireinstalled everything Win NT4, upgraded to Win XP Pro and installed McAfee Security Suite 6.0 And McAfee Spyware. I have had several hits by Trojans and spyware --McAfee is doing the Job. It notifies you of updates and usually installs them automatically. It cost a few bucks, but I after having to wipe out my hardisk twice and reload with all the crap on the net -- well it was worth it. Windows XP updates and McAfee works with it hand in glove. Im very satisfied so far, very satisfied!
well, when you're ready, make sure to get a good one like Norton, I wouldn't surf without it.
I use a free anti-virus package called AVG. It's available at www.grisoft.com. It's not bootable, but if you can get your computer booted, download it and run a scan.
I just downloaded Service Pack 2 right before the election and everything went fine.
You know what else happens is once i do get the damn thing booted up, after a while I get the "Rundll32.exe error" messsage popping up again and again and again and again and then I re-boot to get rid of it and then I`m right back where I started, having to re-boot over and over and over and over. It drives me NUTS!
That's what I do - I check out every single running process until I figure out which ones I want & which ones I don't want.
I use Webferret http://www.ferretsoft.com - the free desktop search engine - along with Google so I don't lose where I wanted to go. With google, sometimes I forget what I wanted to see when I got excited & went somewhere else. The Webferret helps me see sites which are relevant to my search.
love it.
