Actually, Lyles Williams ran in the then third district - it was Tommy Anderson who ran to succeed Larkin (I worked briefly for Larkin). The reasons Gene should be defeated are numerous, IMHO, but I will list two here:
a. by listing himself as a Democrat, whether he votes for the current Democratic majority leader or not, he perpetuates the ongoing efforts of the Dems in Congress (as to his switching to the GOP - I wouldn't have him...)
b. while his rhetoric on paring down and getting rid of the deficit is laudable, his whole career has been negative - he is, in the words of his former desk mate in the MS Senate, an "aginer" - he's never "for" anything - but he can find reasons to be "against" just about anything
- sorry - I know I said two earlier - I have to add a little more
he talks a good game about bring jobs to his Cong dist - but the reality just isn't what he says it is...
he has admittedly been somewhat helpful in getting funding to the Northrup Grumman shipyards - called Ingalls Shipyards earlier - but the heavy lifting has all been done on the Senate side
Gene doesn't have ANY influence in what goes on in DC - he won't toe the party line for the Dems and trashes the GOP every opportunity - his stance as a "maverick" is all a show - just like most politicians -
now I'm guessing that some of you might argue that his stance is a good thing - well, perhaps it is if he wants to be a loner, but a least part of his job is to look after the people of his district - and he doesn't do that with any consistency or any pretense of an even hand - Gene is from Bay St. Louis and works to do what he can for the botton three counties, Hancock, Harrison and Jackson - while ignoring for all practical purposes the other 13 counties in the district -
I went on longer than intended, and I apologize - but there's lots more where that came from - if you live in the Fourth District of Mississippi - please cast you vote next Tuesday for Mike Lott
