Yikes, I'm not sure where you should go from here...

Some things to definitely do is to run Ad-Aware and Spybot back to back a few times (make sure you've gotten their respective updates, too). Also, I definitely recommend doing some searches on the internet on the names of the malware/spyware programs that those programs found. You could post those names, too. For some of the bad things out there there are specific tools that can help fix your problems. For example CWS shredder for removing coolwebsearch problem.

I suppose it's possible that your computer's hardware profile has been permanently compromised, but my guess is that it's still there and that you still have spyware, or you haven't completely reversed the spyware yet.

Keep updating Adaware and spybot over the next few weeks, and restarting your computer, they may keep finding things.

You are heading toward having to re-install win XP or other stuff, but I'd be very cautious b4 you go that far. It's possible that doing a system update might help, though I doubt it. Good luck.

CoolWebSearch necessitated a Format C for me. But then, I'm a geek, so it didn't hurt THAT much.

Yeah, I had to do the same thing to a friend's machine. XP has to be running in order to access the C:\ drive so there is no way to delete a file that's in use...which is how these CWS executables are set up. Better off wiping and shining the drive.

Come Judgement Day, I expect these malware codewriters to be sitting right next to John Kerry in their little special place in Hell...throwing stones at each other.

Hi, I did a "repair" of Windows XP. It kept all of my data, plus now I have the printers and the hardware profiles.

I also have the "two computers" icon in my system tray (which is more than I had before). I still, however, can't connect to my wireless access point. When I right click on the icon to "view available networks," the next screen is grayed out and I don't see the SSID of my home network.

Also, my faxmodem doesn't work, because at boot up time I get a "unable to open TAPI via COM" message.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Glad to hear you're surviving your encounter with malicious malware. The "two computers" icon in the system tray is a network connection, I think, so it may be related to connecting to your wireless network. I don't know what you need to do to fix it.

With regards to the faxmodem, surely if you re-install the software it will work, no? Again, I'm not sure what you should do now.

You've advanced your problems beyond my meager computer knowledge. Good luck. (Oh, and use firefox.)
