People can't understand why I even want her to do this. "She neck reins". So, can't she do both??? (don't know how to roll eyes here:')
Yeah, there's some waste with rolled hay, but the difference in cost evens it out. If you figure that the average roll costs $20 and is the equivalent of 15 to 20 square bales, where can you get 20 square bales for $20? Plus, if you put it in a hay ring under a run-in shed where they can't scatter it and lay on it, they'll pretty much eat it right down to the dirt. I didn't have much more than a dry lot for my horses where I used to live, so having a couple of rolls out there on a flatbed trailer all the time really kept them happy and gave them somthing to do, plus it kept them from trying to graze over or under the fence and tearing it down.
LOL!! When you were talking about always riding with spurs and said "you have to remember that have them on" it reminded me of a lesson I learned the hard way a long time ago when I first started trail riding. I think it's actually an old cowboy saying, but it's something like "Don't squat with spurs on". Ouch! ;o)
Sure she can do both! Horses are so versitile that they can do more stuff than most of us can even dream about. I LOVE watching the people in the Pat Parelli seminars do riding at liberty, where they don't even USE a bridle or a saddle. They jump and do flying lead changes and reining spins. It just blows my mind. I would love to have that kind of communication with my horses some day, but it takes lots of time and commitment and I just don't have it right now. Maybe when I retire!
Just got in from riding Harley, catching my breath then I'll go on Rusty.
LOL, about the saying on spurs:). I was told when I first started using them to where them all the time even when not riding. You get use to them being there. My spurs only come off my boots when I wear my boots when I ride on the motorcycle:). Mack doesn't want scratches. It is amazing tho, how your subconcious learns to make adjustments for them if you wear them all the time, like going down stairs. My spurs are not sharp ones, and I think they are actually kid size. I really have to turn my heel up to make contact with the horse. I give them a chance to respond first without touching them with the spur.
Around here the cheapest you can get round bales is $30.

LOL. Well wearing them all the time an interesting idea. Mine are very weak and I may have them too high because I haven't noticed any problems. The darn boots were what was bothering me.
Well I would rather guide with my legs and save the bit for when I need it. It just seems more natural for me.
I don't like these things. I have a wide foot and they rub both sides of my ankles. Eddie said he will put them on a vise and stretch them but they may break. I don't see how yall wear them like they aren't there. Everytime I move my feet I feel them. Do I have um on wrong?
It might help if you wear a thinner shoe, or you might need a wider spur. My spurs are fine on my riding boots, but are bit of a tight fit on my workboots. I used to ride in a pair of hammerheads, and I could work all day with them on. Often would forget I have them on until I go home and try to take my boots off. Walked away with a lot of borrowed spurs that way too.
Yes, and they were sometimes thin by the time I landed.....
Cats? Let me tell you that when I take them to the vet's office ... the red carpet is rolled out for our entrance. : )
Overall, I think it costs less to own a horse when comparing vet costs.
You know, that's the truth. Horses are expensive but I can count on dropping a couple of hundred when I take a dog or cat to the vet, esp Cindydawg because he always wants to do xrays.
I will search for some old pictures that I made there a few years ago that shows the corn stalks shocked in the fields. If I can find them they will have to be scanned into the computer but I will see if they are still around. : )
Round bales are the best way to go for me too. I use a round ring to stop the waste and it works well. So handy when you want to take off a couple of days or the weather is bad. At least you know that your horses are not hungry.
You are correct on the cost amount of vet visits. That red carpet greeting is expensive. : )
Spurs are to be worn lower than what your picture showed. Now you will barely notice having them on. Until, you forget and squat down while wearing them. : )
Yeah , I have them a lot lower now and they are ok. I couldn't stand the pressure on my ankles before but couldn't get them any lower.
Well Cav, I just got in from hauling and stacking at least 200 bales of hay and I'm maybe half done. Good LORD, somebody just SHOOT me if I ever get square baled hay again!! And the girls just couldn't resist snatching a bale off the trailer, but then would they eat it once it was on the ground, Nooooo, they wanted to eat off the trailer! Then they had to come in the barn and get in the way so I had to shoo them back out. Silly horses!
Now I'm going to get in the shower and go to bed. I'm dead. Seeya!
Ecurbh playing the part of a gate in the background ;~D
