Been wondering the same thing myself
I think it's a fascinating question.
My present guesses are that it was either the work of a
seriously incompetent forger, a DNC saboteur, or is just
a gag that's been floating around and someone stumbled
onto it.
Barnes is a potential source on the "incompetent" theme.
Hillary is a source on the sabotage theme - she knows
exactly what CBS would fall for.
One the gag theme, I suspect that there are fake docs
abroad on the net that say virtually anything about
anyone. Many become urban legends. Did CBS fall for one?
I sure hope we find out. I think it is someone close to Kerry's campaign. Funny how they came to be after Carville and Begala came on board. Please let us find out who is responsible. That will finish Kerry.
I think we will be able to tell tomorrow by watching Kerry if he is connected to this an any way.

It could be Rove who planted the docs knowing the morons in the media would salivate, jump and forget to do due diligence. This, of course, leads to yet another media poop storm and all the oxygen is sucked out of the floundering Kerry campaign. Furthermore, the Nat'l Guard story becomes a liability for Kerry and thus he drops it.
Personally, I would love to see Kerry continue to pound away on this issue because the next Swift ad will simply point out how Kerry was basically absent from all his requirements after he came back from Vietnam.

Well now that you heard the W in GWB means "W"rong, now you know what the "F" in JFKerry means "F"raud! CBS either did this on purpose or their entire credabilty is in doubt... either way it is in doubt. They must have used a document examiner whom they knew would verify the false document, IMHO.

Killian also said his dad never would write such a document (one unsigned) ...and the General, Staudt mentioned in the letters was RETIRED! So much for facts. George W. Bush forged the document in 1973, surreptitiously placing it in the commander's files, knowing that it would be uncovered one day while he was pursuing political office. His plan was to then let people on the Internet (which because of his father's CIA ties he knew would evolve into what it is today because of inside DARPA info) "uncover" the fraud. Dan Rather is actually a mole placed in the media decades ago by the Bush family, awaiting the day when he would be called upon to reveal the doctored "evidence" on national TV.
Man, it's simple. If you can't see it, you don't belong on DU.

Yes, the DNC/CBS lust for power blinded them, but a
trickster could not rely on it.
Which is to say that a Rove trick would have have been
far more sophisticated. But apart from that, I really
sense that the WH does not want anything prior to 1973
to be a campaign issue. They are trying to take the
high road, and Kerry and his allies just won't let the
history go.
My guess is Begala and Carville.
Obviously the men in black at area 51 have a time machine,
they went back and planted these KNOWING they were fake.
Have you heard about the scam where you invest $1000 and
it's deposited at a good rate of interest for 100 years but
then there will be time travel and the investor will come
back and bring you your account TOMORROW!

It's not a scam, man. Yesterday I had to buy another warehouse to store all my cash. I'm becoming concerned that I may trigger an inflationary spiral in the national economy at the rate I'm going.
Remember, this is the same news organization that staged the exploding fuel tanks not so long ago. It made for very impressive news footage and was really "hard hitting" investigative journalism at it's best -- up until it was all exposed as a fraud.
The CBS quibbling over their "authentication" of the documents by experts, recently downgraded to some folks think the documents express the "opinion" of Killian (hearsay of hearsay) just reinforces my belief.
