Actually, if they're going to be assigning blame, I'd start with the trans-fats. Apparantly lipids can readily penetrate the blood brain barrier, and lots of research is now showing that GOOD fats like Vitamin E and fish oil do wonderful things like delaying Alzheimers and relieving depression.
So if over time, GOOD fats do GOOD things for the brain, is it such a logical stretch to think that perhaps BAD fats might do BAD things?
Trans fats have been predominant in the diet since roughly the 1970's as well and, like pollutants, are minimal in Japan and third world areas. it's worth looking into.

Also, how about the increased use of better diagnostic tools,and more people in contact with the healthcare system, since 1979. This should increase the number of diagnoses significantly.
