Phelps is the current world record holder in three events.
(AP) The Olympic Games in Athens don't kick off until next month, but the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials begin in Long Beach, Calif., on Wednesday. Yahoo! Sports' Janet Evans writes that 19-year-old Michael Phelps has plenty of incentive to match Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals won in the Olympic pool at Munich in 1972.
Any particular reason to post a new thread daily? A single thread can sustain thousands of posts (up to 65,535, but the PTBs prefer not to let them get that big, because if they have to pull a post on a large thread it practically shuts down the site).
A remarkable record, and one that will stand for a long time.
Ping!
I was thinking it ought to be a weekly thread. Right now the experiment is trying a daily thread.
Either way, something like this is long past due.

Virginia Tech suspends QB Marcus Vick indefinitely, after he is charged with reckless driving (86 mph in a 65 zone) and possession of marijuana. In May, the 20-year-old Vick was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $250 on three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after he and two teammates gave alcohol to 14- and 15-year-old girls at the players' apartment. Vick was already under a three game suspension for this earlier conviction.

The Green Weenie doesn't go back that far in Pirate lore.
"During a 1966 game against Houston, Pirate trainer Danny Whelan screamed at Astros' pitcher Dave Giusti, "You're gonna walk him!" while waving a green rubber hot dog in the direction of the mound. Giusti, thus jinxed, indeed proceeded to walk the batter and eventually lose the game. Prince noticed this from the broadcast booth, and the next day he grilled Whelan about it on the air. And thereby the legend of the Green Weenie was born...."

I must be getting waaaaaaay to old. My mind is tricking me. Thanks for the correction on the weenie.
BTW, as soon as I brought up the green weenie thing, the Pirates lost. Oh well.
My mother, a huge fan from the 30's until her death, would never watch a game on TV...... she thought it was bad luck....... I'm nuts too....... and I love it! Go Buccos!

It is kind of ironic as I listen to Tereeeza Heinz on Rush, trying to be a Burgher, even though she has an estate in Fox Chapel. Chappelers are in their own little world(ala kerry/edwards). I know, I had relatives who lived in Fox Chapel in the 70's and 80's.
It was actually kind of sad watching her, kinda of laughing at the village idiot, IMO.
Have you ever noticed how many vocabulary words you learned through listening to his broadcasts? ---- sartorial splendor (referring always to travelling Sec. Rice), inclement weather, ..........and I'm having a mental block now, but there are dozens of words that I first heard from his mouth. He was the greatest, and very intelligent.
As I've said before, when he was broadcasting back in the 50's and 60's, the rain delays, with all the great stories he would tell, were better than the game itself. He was the BEST in an age of great RADIO broadcasters.
He and "The Possum", Jim Woods, were great together...........two old pros!
Kerry in Minnesota: "I learned my first cuss words on a tractor". LOL!
Theraaaaaaaaaaaaza was one fine looking girl back in the late 60's-70's. It's a shame John Heinz died. He was a great gentleman.
Who's the guy that does phillies radio, and also NFL playoff radio?
I love hearing him do a football game.
Heck, I dunno..
Philly is on the wrong side of the state for me.
As far as I'm concerned, it's just another NYC suburb.
Harry Kalas. He also does NFL Films.
Thank you both.
