I've never read the magazine (and if this is representative, I probably won't). There are some good artists on here...maybe not earthshattering, but, still. I like Kansas, Asia, Howard Jones, etc.
I love Toad the Wet Sprocket's "Pale." These Clymers don't know what they're talking about.
Oh my. I'll chalk it up to your youth, but please take a serious look at the great Jim's poetic twaddle (not to mention the band's tremendous three-chord range). I wrote better stuff in fifth grade.
Music From Another World was later re-released under the name Real Gas Music From Jupiter.
>>I get the feeling that, as with their 50 worst singles list, they tried to avoid the slam dunks.<<
I think you nailed it. Some stuff is just bad and it's not even funny. This list was entertaining. Some artists whose work I really enjoyed at one time were on this list. And I thought his reasons were sound, in a funny way.
It kept me reading...
Note the colored sugar cubes in her hand.
I agree with most but not the anti-keyboard attacks on Asia Emerson Lake & Palmer and Kansas.
"Real Gas Music From Uranus" would've been the obvious choice, but what do I know.
Hahaha,
Thanks Mountaineer for your input, and actually I agree with you in some respects - The Doors, perhaps, weren't as wonderful as I think (I guess its "chalked up to [my] youth" (UGH)) but I will defend them on one point:
If you want to base an argument on the validity of one or more bands due to the amount of chords used to play their music, that just about invalidates 80% of all bands ever. Unfortunately (I'm sure you'll agree), even many "legendary" bands often make a habit of sticking to the sounds that get the greatest approval ratings from their fans, and I'd argue that it leads to many songs that are just mixed and matched chords in different orders, or what have you.
I'm certainly the farthest thing from some peacenik, hippie-centric whiner but I find that the Grateful Dead (for all their jackass-etry) have some stellar tunes - yet a great many of Garcia's four-fingered jammin' sounds utterly the same and can get boring.
Good music (IMO) is "in the ear of the beholder", I suppose, but I just cannot see this as a viable excuse for cRAP music or any of the whining little tarts with instruments these days.
However, I do see your point about The Doors, and Morrison's drugged out "poetic rants" are a bit overbearing, but they just sound so neat!! LoL.
