I have been calling and calling, but now, they REALLY never answer the phone.

They're too busy watching part of their Super Toilet Bowl halftime show.

How 'bout asking your state attorney general office to call or write them on your behalf?

Or maybe your Congresscritter's staff in Washington?

I know this doesn't really help your situation but the best way is never to sign up in the first place.

Wow, that has to suck.

When I finally convinced my mother in law to get rid of AOL I made the call for her, was simple and easy, she didnt have any problems out of them.

I used AOHell for about 3 weeks on dialup before my DSL was turned on after a move. As soon as the first month was billed to my credit card, I called and cancelled. The woman went through the stupid spiel about how their broadband service is so incredible, but she was pleasant enough and even had the charge refunded to my credit card.

Good luck, if it doesn't work I'd initiate fraud proceedings with my credit card.

We had AOL for a while, and when we cancelled, they still took $79. May I suggest that you call Clark Howard?

They billed me the same way, for 3 months. I finally got my card credited by threatening litigation.. They are crooks, in my opinion!!

My son had the same problem. After he called to cancel they told him they were going to give him 6 more months for free, he told them he didn't want 6 more months even if it was free. They gave it to him anyway and started billing him again after about two months. It took him about 6 months to get the service stopped and the charges removed.

I know 2 people who had the same problem. If you would like I will check with my sister, because I know she had a similar problem with AOL. It may be worth it to call your credit card companies and tell them no AOL charge.
They must make a fortune doing this.

I'm going to put on my Kevlar for this, because the insults and flames will commence in five... four... three... two... one...

I and my family have been AOL customers since '97. We've endured the price hikes, the spam, and the abuses for all this time, for a number of reasons:

1. Missus is handicapped. The disabled functions on AOL suuport her more than adequately;

2. With all the side trips and short-tour deployments I've had since 9-11, the only reliable ISP that has been in every locale, has been AOL. All I need is an outside line, and the local AOL sever # - which I find in seconds - and I've got access.

3. By virtue of #2 above, I've loaned my laptop out to every troop who comes with me, and my billet invariably turns into the unit's Internet cafe. None of my guys ever goes without an email link home. And I even provide coffee...

But, and I agree with everyone here, the recent issues with AOL - the spamming, the blatant hypocrisy and anti-anything bias, to name a few - has us on the ropes. Even my son's AOL account, which has every parental block and pre-teen code on it, is getting Viagra ads and chick shots.

If there's another ISP that does what AOL does, I'm there. But I don't see it.

Because on various threads, AOL customers are considered lower than scum.

Jim,

I sent you a private reply as I didn't know if it was okay to post a link here to another forum, which has an AOL thread complaining about the same thing that you might find interesting.

This month, for the first time, a charge for AOL service appeared on ANOTHER credit card of mine, one which was never used for AOL service.

If this is factual and you can produce paperwork to prove it...you have them by the balls. It's called credit card fraud and your Attorney General would be very interested in this, I'm sure. Give his/her office a call.
