i see several of the area's private HS have already called off tomorrow but that is it. it isn't a sure thing by any stretch, but it is a distinct possibility that there won't be school again tomorrow.

You girls are lucky you get to know that far ahead of time about school closings.

Up here, we are lucky if they call it 1 hour before the buses are to leave to pick up the kids.

State Aid and all that.

we don't normally get to know this far in advance, but the roads have not been totally cleared from last night's snow and they are calling for sleet tonight into tomorrow. so given that we are in the south, and not the HALE AND HEARTY northland of upstate NY (my hub's family is from up there, so believe me, i KNOW!) figure that these people can't drive in bad weather to save their lives!

Your hubs family is from up here??? Small world.

We get lots of out-of-towners driving our roads, so I can relate to those who aren't used to the bad weather.

The trick here is to pick the kids up, drop them off at school, then release them after an hour or so, the highschoolers first.

I have family in VA Beach. They tell me how the slightest bit of winter weather down there can cause such havoc.

Hope you get to stay home and stay warm tomorrow.

okay, xsboy's school has cancelled for tomorrow, but that was the pattern yesterday too. xsbrownie and xsteen's schools waited til the dang morning to put it up. what are they waiting for? this entire scenario is complicated by the fact that all of the gazillion private schools in this area all have their cancellation policy pegged to a public school system, but 3 of the major pub school districts are out for teacher work days today and tomorrow. that means that administrators in every single one of these private schools has to make their own call. and bc they are private schools, that also means that instead of buses, you have INDIVIDUALS out on the road driving to and from. it is a weighty responsibility for the administrators to have their students out on these roads, which is why i think they are all going to cancel again tomorrow.

As well they should.

Here the private schools usually use Public school buses because of the lower enrollment.

So if the public schools are closed so are the Private ones.

i know the Catholic schools up there have declining enrollment, but down here, in the vaunted Falls Church and Fairfax Co. public school systems, our catholic schools have people waiting in line from 4 am on registration day! there are 17,000 kids in Catholic school in the Arlington diocese, which comprises all of No.VA. The pub schools would poop themselves if they had those Cath school kids showing up on their doorsteps looking for their Godgiven right to a public school education!

I have one left in highschool

If she continues to work hard, next year will be her last.

I hope my Bro and S-I-L can get their savings built up to move out of this area before their two little ones are in middle school.

They are thinking of migrating down that way soon.

I still don't know about my school district and I probably won't know until the morning. It's been raining pretty good for about an hour now, but the temp is still above freezing. if it drops - we'll be in trouble in the morning.

But XS is right - we're down south and aren't always as capable of dealing with it as folks up your way........although I do remember that NYC was never real good at dealing with it when I was growing up there!!!

Another reason they may call the schools quicker here than where XS lives is because I live in the rural boonies with mostly 2 lane/no shoulder roads.

I think I have passed through/by your vicinity when I go down to see family in VA Beach, Gabz.

I was just down that way in Sept for a family wedding.

I remember driving down parts of RT 13 and being amazed at how much water was ponding/soaking the lawns as we drove by.

It looked almost like swampland.

They're right. I spent the last 20 years living less than 200 miles north of Va Beach and now I only live about 60 miles north of the bay bridge tunnel.

I don't see the total lunatic panic here with a bad weather report as I did in Delaware, but there is still a bit of it.

I also managed to get a rare photo of Registered (with MAF):

My photo with Dick Armey came out like crap. :( I got a pic with him by the DC Chapter booth, where some of the DC ladies told him all about FR, gave him a bunch of pens, mouse pads, etc., and told him our screen names. He found mine particularly amusing. Then, a few minutes later, I went to his book signing and he was like "You again?! The redhead (my hair looked kind of strawberry blonde in that light) from New York City!" Then we talked about my idiot congresscritter (Jerry Nadler); he told me that Nadler will never leave the job, and then asked if he'd lost a lot of weight -- the answer was a definite NO!

Some of the best of Ann Coulter's remarks were transcribed on someone's blog:

"Edwards, Kerry and Dean came out of Iowa in a 3 way race. When Bill Clinton heard the news, he said 'I remember my first Iowa 3 way like it was yesterday'"

"Calling Bush a draft dodger, which is not true, will join the rest of the Democrats' arguments such as 'you're stupid' and 'Halliburton!!'"

"Bill Clinton is so hellbent on getting Clark elected he's gone as far as not endorsing him."

"Clark claimed that the White House told him, after 9/11, to go on tv and blame it on Saddam. When questioned, he changed it to 'people around the White House'. When further pressed, he said it was someone at 'a Middle East thinktank in Canada'. When told that there was no Middle East thinktank in Canada, Clark said it was someone from the Menachem Begin Think Tank in Israel that has a branch in Montreal. Well, at least Clark is getting the hang of being a Democrat- blame everything on the Jews."

"Democrats have adopted a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy in regards to Clark's sanity."

"It is so great to be among rightwingers" (after a lengthy standing ovation).
