I qualify under category #1 as someone who had to sit for over 24 hours on a train from NYC to Albany that was stuck in the snow. My advice (which you won't take):
Don't do it. I decided a while back that I would view FoTR and TTT Extended DVDs in the comfort of my own home, and then go to the theater.
When RoTK Extended DVD comes out, the real fun will begin. That might just tip me over into getting a wide-screen TV with a decent sound system. (Or wait a minute, how about having the party at my brother's house, who is a bachelor film buff with all the neat stuff?) That way, we can take a break at the end of each disk, eat our meals, have comfortable seats, not have our shoes stick to the floor, not have the girl next to us keep asking, "Who is that elf again?" (Wait a minute, if my wife comes, I will have that last part anyway.)
Seriously folks, and you heard it here first, as more people get fancy home theater equipment, and commercial theaters get smaller and more annoying due to rude people, watching at home is going to be "in" and going to the theater "out". First-run films will be pay-per-view over digital cable or satellite, and people will host parties for long-anticipated movies like RoTK or even the more average but good ones.

Dan, my wife and I went to Australia back in the summer (their winter) of 2000, which included a 14 hour flight from LA to Sydney. We upgraded to business class so we had more comfortable seats for the trip but we also took along what's known as a "travel bucky" for our neck.

Sounds good. Time and location? (c;
Oh well: the theory of Cognitive Dissonance (widely misunderstood) indicates that the degree of enjoyment will increase with the degree of pain. That being the case, I expect to enjoy myself immensely.

Thank you for going to the trouble. It's not so much my neck I'm worried about, unless we get stuck in the front row. It's the other end.

Perhaps you could sit on it then, like a woopie cushion. :)

We're getting ready too. In the past we have done the Star Wars trilogy all in one sitting. We were with four 12 year old boys Whew! This time we're with older teenagers.
Day before we will:
Pig out the day before on heavy foods (red meat, plenty of veggies)
Go to bed early
Trilogy Tuesday we will:
Wear loose clothes like you would would for a transatlantic flight
Get to the theater extra early to get good seats
Order the large Coke but not drink unless dying of thirst.
No large popcorn
Yes various junk food (</diet>)
After movie:
Curse Jackson for trashing character of Frodo :^( ... or praise Jackson for swerving back to the book's storyline and Tolkien's basic points :^)

Hey, I know it's early days yet, but ROTK is currently (along with The Godfather) the only film in history to score of 100/100 on MetaCritic, based on the reviews of Entertainment Weekly, Time, Newseek, Variety and Hollywood Reporter: all perfect 100's.
Also, on Rotten Tomatoes, ROTK has a 100% fresh rating and an average score of 9.6/10 after 11 reviews. Pretty amazing.

I haven't even seen the first two. I can see me going to see the third and complaining about the horrible character development "It's like they just assume you know these people".

If you know nothing about LOTR don't even bother trying to catch up. I've seen all three multiple times and I still don't know who's Saruman and who's Sauron.

My brother is on a show on VH-1. SuperSecret TV Formulas! No, I haven't seen it either. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
