I once had a dog whose methane emissions produced symptoms like that.

We had a dog that was very apparently repelled by the smell of human methane and would quickly leave the room at the slightest toot! I had some real fun at the expense of that poor creature!

What I don't understand is all the hair in the artist's rendition. Reptile or mammal?

A mammal-like reptile, and the forerunner of all mammals and man. One of the most successful critters of the age and a real winner from the results of the Permian Extinction.
