You can always cite the communist gulags in Asian nations (eg China). The so-called cradle of humanity can also be considered the cradle of slavery. How about the Egyptians and the Jews or the Babylonians and the Jews. Slavery has existed long before Christ walked the Earth. You can also let the dolt know that white Christians were largely responsible for the elimination of slavery in the West.

Actually, many of the African tribes practiced slavery long before the white man. When one tribe defeated another, they would take slaves. When whites arrived, they found that the African nations had very little of value to trade, but they did have manpower in the form of slaves. In the time before the industrial revolution, when man and beast were the engine of industry, manpower that could be purchased was very appealing.

The white man didn't start slavery. He did, however, turn it into a business.

There's even a big hollywood movie about Roman slavery. I can't think of the name. The story about the Roman gladiator that started a revolution.

For that matter, the movie "Gladiator" that was just out. Rent it for your friend and ask him to point out the Christians who owned the slave Gladiators.
