South America received 1/3 of Africa's slaves. Most of the slave owners in Africa were Black themselves. There are still countless black slaves today owned by blacks in Africa. I think America only received 12% of Africa's slaves.

You can always cite the communist gulags in Asian nations (eg China). The so-called cradle of humanity can also be considered the cradle of slavery. How about the Egyptians and the Jews or the Babylonians and the Jews. Slavery has existed long before Christ walked the Earth. Your liberal friend is an ignorant fool that probably doesn't care for Christians much. You can also let the dolt know that white Christians were largely responsible for the elimination of slavery in the West.

And let's not forget that American Indians, those blessed souls loved by the left, also kept slaves. Indians kept slaves from other bands, or whites, and I'd imagine even some blacks. That is, if they didn't just rape them and kill them right off.

Actually, many of the African tribes practiced slavery long before the white man. When one tribe defeated another, they would take slaves. When whites arrived, they found that the African nations had very little of value to trade, but they did have manpower in the form of slaves. In the time before the industrial revolution, when man and beast were the engine of industry, manpower that could be purchased was very appealing.
The white man didn't start slavery. He did, however, turn it into a business.

On the web, check Gregory Kane's past columns at the Baltimore Sun (
http://sunspot.net). Greg has done a lot of research and pieces on Islamic slavery and the lack of attention given by blacks in America.

Well, the people running the empires in Sumer, Akkad, Assyria, Babylonia, Egypt, Greece, Persia, Syria, Canaan, Rome, Parthia, Lydia, Carthage, Troy, or perhaps the Hurrians, the Hittites, the Etruscans...good heavens, it goes on and on...all these had slaves well before Christ graced the earth.
Your friend is a liberal moron. But there I repeat myself...

This person is so friggin indoctrinated that he WILL NOT BELIEVE anything you offer as a counter argument. He will start by saying, "Well, this person can say anything. What proof is this?"
If you continue, he will say, "Well neither you nor I were there so this is not really verifiable!"
When you bring forth further information, he will just poo-poo the whole idea and get that smug "I know better than anyone" look that most libs put on when caught with the lie.
Save yourself a bunch of trouble and aggrivation....punch the SOB in the face and tell him to get scrawed!

and he made the claim that only Christian white societies have ever been involved in slavery Ah, excuse me ... the Jews ... Moses ... Egypt ... the Jews were slaves long before there was a Christianity.
Romans were rather fond of the practice, too ...

Tell your friend to read the Old Testament with a concordance in hand. Slaves as far as the eye can see and no "white Christian societies."
BTW, there were a great many blacks who were not only slave holders but loyal confederates in the Old South.
To: electron1
I recommend that you and your friend read Thomas Sowell's Cultures trilogy to get a global and historical perspective on slavery.

The only one that I could add would be Liberia, which was a country formed of former American Slaves.

There's even a big hollywood movie about Roman slavery. I can't think of the name. The story about the Roman gladiator that started a revolution.
For that matter, the movie "Gladiator" that was just out. Rent it for your friend and ask him to point out the Christians who owned the slave Gladiators.

The ancient Chinese emperors are another bunch who owned an amazing number of slaves. Slaves built the Great Wall.
