people here actually buy a house on a plot of land and KNOCK IT DOWN to build what they want, close in.

That's a good idea but I'm dealing with hindsight now. I'll remember it for future projects though.

For me it's like Zen. Laura Earl thinks I'm strange. What the heck I built an airplane. And it flew very well too.

Highland Park in Dallas (near Southern Methodist University, the school of Laura Bush) is a highly desireable area in which to live. About 15 years ago a friend bought a small home there and completely leveled it - just for the lot........ I was stunned! lol...... but it happens a lot more now...... damn expensive piece of land don't you think?

Tah was what I was telling her to do. they have reached the duct tape black paint stage.

It's the same way out here. People buy 20 acres with a ramshackle house on it and tear the house down to build a nicer one. Not me, of course. I just keep remodeling the tarpaper shack. Work on the new front entrance starts today. 3 panel leaded glass door's gonna look great on the tarpaper shack. Got to insulate it before winter sets in.

Not really. Once you get this screw resolved, you will still have to do something, No?
(Then you can casually suggest what I told you, and take all the credit ; )

we live about 2 mi. outside the Beltway. the leveling of houses goes on inside the beltway, bc people want to live close in, in an established neighborhood with trees etc. i would not want to live that close in, that badly, personally. we are lucky to have a new home in an established neighborhood, bc a builder bought an old farm and subdivided it into 4 half acre lots.

CJ here in Bucks County, if you have 1 1/2 acres, you are a "land owner"......lol....... our attorney in Texas bought a house with 32 acres around it and commented to us "there isn't much land, just 32 acres" and he meant it..... not bragging, almost apologizing for the small size.....lol........friends here didn't quite see it as funny......lol
To: hobbes1
Yes, but I'll need to suggest it in a way so as not to drain the testosterone from the room.

Depending upon the college choice for my daughter, we might end up looking closer to the office for M....... I'm not crazy about moving to Maryland, but how much worse could it be than PA? I'm just not sure I'd want to change my name to
WhyisaTexasgirlinMD....... people might start to question me and CJ.....

At this point, I'd yank out the offending spindle(s), deal with the screw, and go to the lumber yard with the spindle to find one that at least half ass matches it, then install and paint it to match the others...Of course, if that happens to me, I will just go out to hubby's workshop and get another baluster (spindle), seal it with urethane and install it. Since he made all the parts for the stairway and loft rail, he made sure we had some extra balusters, top rail, etc. We've already had to replace one that the dogs chewed on when they got accidentally trapped upstairs and were bored.
