One man one story.
Reminds me of when Full Metal Jacket came out ("How can you shoot woman and children?" reply "Easy you don't lead them as much.") or Platoon. Some people just don't want to admit that even American boys can sometimes crack when you send them off to fight at the age of 18 and 19 and expose them to horror. Vietnam ws especially nasty because of the style of war and the fact that our self imposed rules of engagement meant we couldn't win.

Care to elaborate further on this? My take on this is that you are not giving much credence to the retired officer's statement and are instead leaning toward's JF'nK's based on what you have seen in the movies.
I might be unfairly questioning you but to me your post was rather vague.
