Authorities intercepted what they believe is the first small-boat smuggling attempt to launch from the Netherlands.
A rubber dinghy packed with 38 migrants was discovered drifting without an engine off the southern Dutch coast last Saturday.
Emergency crews towed it to the nearby port of Cadzand, in the Zeeland province, and two Sudanese men were arrested on suspicion of being involved in human smuggling, Dutch prosecutors said.
A magistrate ordered their detention for 14 days on Tuesday, and both suspects are being held in restricted conditions, meaning they can only communicate with their lawyers, they added.
Mike Tapp, the Labour MP for Dover and Deal and a former Intelligence Corps soldier who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, said the incident demonstrated how trafficking networks are evolving their methods in response to tighter enforcement.

“Migrants”
Why don’t those African and islamist nations institute cradle-to-grave welfare and free health care and free universal medical care and free food for their people? Who’s stopping them from doing those things? Are there a lot of greedy, hateful Joos and Republicans preventing them from passing such legislation? You’d think the leaders of those countries would be concerned about the dangerous lengths their citizens are willing to subject themselves to in order live a modest lifestyle. Or at least somewhat embarrassed.
They have it in the Gulf States.
Good point. So there are examples for those countries to follow. Or at least send their citizens to. Seems like that would be much safer than having them cross dangerous waters on overcrowded rubber rafts.
The Pequod. Santiago’s skiff. PT-73. PT-109. The Minnow.
Solution: Moby Dick, the Old Man and the Sea, McHale’s Navy, JFK’s WWII boat and Gilligan’s Island.
But in the UK, you'll qualify.
