In May 2026 we travelled to Spain and toured the country via trains for two weeks. Our first stop, covered in this video, was Madrid. When we landed in Madrid it was raining and the temperature was below 60 degrees. Quite a change from South Florida. Fortunately, by the end of our first full day in Madrid the sun broke out from the clouds and it quickly became much warmer.
To say that we were impressed with Spain in general and with Madrid in particular is quite an understatement. Many of the sights we saw frankly overwhelmed me. Madrid was not just impressive due to its rich history but also I was extremely impressed by the people who the best way to describe it were culturally sophisticated in many ways from music to food to art.
Also impressive was the urban transportation systems of the cities we visited including Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and Toledo. The vast underground train system of Madrid was impressive not only for the frequency of the train stops but for its overall cleanliness. I spotted absolutely no graffiti. The cost to travel on the city trains was very modest. We bought a pass providing us with 10 train trips including transfers for just 9 Euros or somewhere around $11 so each trip cost over a little over a buck American.
We stayed at a hotel about 15 miles outside of the center of Madrid in order to get a good discount on our hotel stay. However, we were able to travel to the center of Madrid within just about a half hour.
The rest of our time in Spain, which I will cover in future videos, we traveled between cities on the long distance train systems. It is also a great way to view the Spanish countryside.

Thanks. Always love travelogues.

Amazing because we spend 20 days in Germany and Austria late August- Early Sept and those countries are covered in graffiti. I spent some time looking into it and learned (no surprise) that a small number of people commit the crimes, about 500 in each of the bigger cities. I’m appalled how they tolerate it with lenient laws. It’s the tip of the iceberg of breakdown of social order and Western Civilization.
The Spanish treat strangers and travelers very well in my experience.
The country has changed quite a bit since then.
The pick pocket, camera and bag stealing Gypsies are very friendly too...
We were in Viersen, Germany (15 miles west of Dusseldorf) on a genealogical tour. When we arrived, the city square had a "Pakistani Festival" going on! Hijabs everywhere. It was shocking. Right before the traditional Oktoberfest season.
Instead of this...

We got this...
How long before the 3 million illegal North African Muslims take over the Spanish government?
Great Britain, France, and Germany are first, of course.
Spain looked to be about 4% Muslim from what I saw two years ago.
The situation in Spain is expected to drastically change next month when the Socialist Prime Minister is expected to be voted OUT of office.
A few days ago my sister and her partner began a train-based vacation in Spain, starting with Madrid. They’re quite impressed so far.
Fiesta every day. Usually its like that. Or isn’t. We saw protests 3 weeks ago in Seville over housing and that blown up eviction case. Not riots, just disruptive marches, nationwide, with plenty of pro-hamas and red flags in the mix, as now. Luckily we balanced that with 4 days in Extremadura where they blast Sanchez. Spain is amazing.
