Blaine Holt to Newsmax: Europe Impediment to Peace in Ukraine
Newsmax ^ | October 12, 2026

Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Blaine Holt told Newsmax on Monday that European leaders are standing in the way of a diplomatic solution to the Russia-Ukraine war, even as President Donald Trump seeks to ease global energy costs through negotiations with Moscow.

Appearing on "Rob Schmitt Tonight," Holt blamed NATO and European Union leaders for prolonging the conflict while resisting Trump's efforts to negotiate an end to the fighting.

"Here's your big problem. And we're not talking about them yet. It's Europe, NATO, the EU leaders," Holt said. "They're doubling down on something that they don't have the cards to double down on. They haven't offered one diplomatic solution in this war yet."

Holt argued that Europe's energy crisis has made continued fighting increasingly costly, saying diesel prices reaching $11 a gallon in Finland and as much as $13 elsewhere in Europe.

"President Trump is trying to offer relief and an avenue toward a diplomatic solution," Holt said.

He also defended Trump's efforts to discourage attacks on Russian oil refineries, arguing that further disruptions to fuel supplies could worsen global economic conditions and contribute to food shortages.

"And so, Europe has been the impediment here," Holt said. "Zelenskyy is following their lead. I think, foolishly, there's no military answer to this war."

Holt questioned whether additional military assistance to Ukraine could produce a decisive outcome against Russia, arguing that Western leaders have failed to present a workable alternative to negotiations.

The time to negotiate with Russians is when they are getting nowhere, only progressing six feet, or losing ground, i.e., now.

Idiotic and dishonest comments: almost all of the fuel price rise is due to Trump's war with Iran.

Trump has been saying the Ukrainians have no cards, but they fought the Russians to a standstill despite the niggardly assistance they've received.

The Europeans continue to support Ukraine because they have no illusions about Putin's lust for recreating the Russian Empire. If Ukraine capitulates, the Baltics will be next and probably Poland, as Putin has made it clear he considers all of the former Warsaw Pact to be Russia's "sphere of influence." Plus funding Ukraine is far less expensive than another 10 million refugees.

Trump seems to have forgotten Churchill's dictum that those who trade honor for peace will in the end have neither.

The side that keeps asking for a ceasefire is the side that is losing, not winning.

Nonsense.

Russian and Gulf diesel seaborn exports were roughly equal at 10% of global supplies each.

To say reduced Gulf shipments are “almost all” The price rise borders on outright lying.

And the US is, by far, the biggest supplier.

The biggest price rise occurred between Dec 2025 and Mar 2026 after Trump attacked Iran.

Trump seems to have forgotten Churchill's dictum that those who trade honor for peace will in the end have neither.

During the Cold War, we kept the peace with Russia by staying out of their backyard…And they staying out of ours. Ukraine is Russia’s backyard.

We won the Cold War, which is why the Warsaw Pact is gone and its former members are in NATO. There was never any concession of a "Russian sphere of influence," and given the fact that after 4 1/2 years of war, Russia still has not defeated Ukraine, there should not be.

That's the Real in Realpolitik: Russia has simply bitten off more than it can chew and should suffer the consequences.

You’re full of it: gas prices dipped to a low of $2.81 per gallon in January 2026. They started climbing dramatically after the Iran War started.

Diesel, not gas.

This is not a problem with crude supplies which impacted gas prices.

This problem is wholly Diesel refinery capacity.

I am not full of it, you are ignorant of the facts...by choice.

Diesel went from an average of $3.72 at the beginning of March 2026 to $5.02 by the end of the month.

As I said, it was the Iran War that drove up prices and, once again, you're full of it.

Matters little, Ukraine has no light at the end of their tunnel. President Trump was being diplomatic when he called for a new “ leader”.

St Z is nearing his Mussolini moment.
