One month until Election Day, voter dissatisfaction with the economy, concerns about political extremism and frustration with President Trump have Democrats within reach of flipping four Republican-held governorships, opening a wide lead in Iowa and an expanding advantage in Ohio among likely voters, according to new polls by The New York Times and Siena University.
In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican fixture in the state for decades, is now narrowly behind his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa.
The Democratic candidate also has an advantage in the race for governor of Alaska. The only place surveyed where the Republican is ahead in the campaign for the governor’s office in Kansas, now held by a retiring Democrat.
The polls also show Democrats with an advantage in the Senate in these states, with Democrats ahead in Texas and Alaska, and with the edge in Ohio, while the races in Kansas and Iowa are neck-and-neck.
While national attention has fixated on the fight for control of Congress, governorships will be important heading into a wide open presidential election in 2028. Not only will governors influence the electoral process, they will help shape the redistricting wars that are likely to spill into 2027 and beyond.
The polling results underscore how Democrats have been able to push into states that have traditionally favored Republicans, as voters have soured on Mr. Trump amid frustration over the economy, rising gas prices and a deeply unpopular war in Iran.
Still, the polls show that even as many of the Republican candidates for governor are at a disadvantage, they are outrunning the difficult political environment. Mr. Trump’s approval rating stands at just 40 percent across the five states. In four of five states surveyed, the Republican candidates for governor are doing better than the president’s approval ratings.

Polls? How have the pollsters been doing, lately?
Either this election will have the largest polling error ever recorded, or this is shaping up to be a Republican wipeout.
I hope the NYT continues to post this polling crap. It only fires up the Republican base and gives them resolve.
Uh-huh.
We believe you.
Really.
Based on "vibes" alone, the Republican base was fired up in 2024. You are not really seeing that this time. It's primarily due to the Iran war.
You can check out X and TikTok. Podcasters are important and in 2024, they were mostly pro-Trump.
It seems they’re only oversampling demonrat voters again as usual.

Mr Trump? Did the refer to Mr Obama or Mr Biden?
We’ve reached the point where constantly people will be unhappy with the party in power, and so they’ll just switch back-and-forth every election cycle.
I guess people see what they want to see. I do not see the difference, but certainly these polls are intended to give the impression that your are talking about. Thus, they are not substantive, but directed persuasion. The Democrats are in the illusion business because they have accomplished very little when one objectively observes, so they have no choice but to present an opposing illusion to reality.
Looks like the hate Trump movement and the Iran War will sink Trump for good in this election. Once the Democrats take over Trump will be lucky to finish his ballroom. Next President Newsom to roll back all of Trumps Reforms and make America look like California. Trump will be lucky to keep out of prison.
My entire life, if the economy sucks and there is war overseas, the party in charge gets wiped out in the midterms. I don’t need polls to tell me what’s gonna happen this time around. Of course there are people who can’t and don’t want to see the obvious.
Sounds like the FR TDSers fantasy dreams.
There has been a sharp decline in the popularity of Republican politicians, in general, and of President Trump, in particular, in the last two years.
While my neighbors are every bit as conservative as they have always been, there's a sense that most Republicans aren't and that P resident Trump suffers from an ego the size of the Hindenburg that has caused him to completely lose his grasp of market economics and fiscal responsibility.
They're not gonna vote for any Democrats, but they may not vote for many Republicans either.
Bingo. I’m a conservative. Smaller government, lower taxes, more individual freedom. I don’t see any political party representing my interests at the moment.
The two most conservative national pollsters, Rasmussen and Trafalgar, both have Talarico up by 1% over Paxton, both by 46%-45%.
I suspect that your “barn Poll” is a pretty accurate reflection of many Republican voters attitude towards the current political situation.
As it has been a reoccurring theme when Republicans get control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency, they significantly handicap themselves with infighting, incompetence and arrogance.
