After struggling to win over young men in 2024, Democrats sense an opportunity to make inroads with a demographic that’s become increasingly disillusioned with the party in power.
Two years ago, the GOP was able to capitalize on an environment in which young men felt either ignored or actively disliked by the Democratic Party. But with the cost of living going up — thanks in part to an unpopular war in the Middle East — the cultural factors that motivated young men to turn out for Republicans in 2024 may be outweighed by economic factors this time around.
Veteran Democratic strategist Dane Strother attributed the 2024 swing to the “bro sphere,” those podcasters who influenced large numbers of young men to support Trump and JD Vance as a correction to the extremism of the Democrats. Now, he says, their listeners are having second thoughts.
“They got caught up in the bro sphere, and as soon as they finished high-fiving they realized it’s $25 for a sandwich, chips, and a soda,” Strother told National Review. “And then they went to the gas station and said, ‘Holy cow!’”
Still, while some Democrats sense blood in the water, others in the party fear that candidates’ showing with young men could be a mirage that will lead Democrats to believe that they have better standing with the group than they actually do. These voices are encouraging their fellow Democrats not to learn the wrong lessons from the midterms.

Yes let’s listen to what the Liberals have to say about our party...
PS National review isn’t what it used to be
I’m really old and have been heavily leaning away from the GOPee for quite a few years. [never towards the ‘Rats..]
Much more of their antics and I’ll totally fall over.
They missed Trump's rally, tonight, obviously ...
Surrounded by young voters!!
Speaking of which, the average age of NR’s readership is probably 80.
They’re too busy getting high and playing video games.
National Poo Poo.
> Much more of their antics and I’ll totally fall over. <
The Republican Party as a whole never fails to disappoint. Trump has done somewhat better. But as we can see here on FR, many conservatives are upset about the federal deficit and yet another Mideast war. That’s on Trump.
But I will give the establishment R’s and D’s credit for one thing. They have successfully rigged the system such that there are no practical alternatives. There is no third way.
Look at that enthusiastic whippersnapper and his "no tax on Social Security" sign!
The basis for the article is and poll from “Cygna” and Third Way. Anyone know anything about those outfits?
Hmmm, some conservatives weren’t too upset when Bush’s Iraw War was raging along with Afghanistan and raging and raging aaaaand raging.
This “war” in Iran is really funny. Had anyone referred to this as a war twenty years ago, we would have laughed. Now, I suppose, anytime so much as a snowball is hurled when a Republican is in office and it’s a raging war like no other!!!
*****
I question the $25 price of the items mentioned.
Like Reagan’s “I didn’t leave the Democrat Party, it left me” we all have been disappointed with the GOP. Should I leave the argument with one name “Thune”?
Past: “Vote for us Republicans in this election and we promise on Day One in office we will end Obamacare.”
“We are actively pursuing illegalities and use of intimidate and lawfare by the Obama (then Biden) Administrations. Comey, Brennan (insert names here) will soon be facing legal problems.” Look for them at high class catered dinner parties in the Hamptons-—not along rows of federal prison cells.
After awhile the voters get more and more feeling betrayed.
And the last person to say “Holy Cow’ was Harry Carey, and he passed from this mortal coil years ago. This article sounds like the author had to struggle off the fainting couch to write it.
> Hmmm, some conservatives weren’t too upset when Bush’s Iraq War was raging… <
True that. But I was sick to my stomach about it from day one.
> This “war” in Iran is really funny. Had anyone referred to this as a war twenty years ago, we would have laughed. <
You raise an interesting point. The Constitution is quite clear. Congress declares the war. The President runs the war.
But no one has paid any attention to that since WW2. We don’t have wars anymore. We now have kinetic strikes, police actions, etc. So when does such a thing become a war?
That’s up to Congress to decide. And they just don’t care, one way or another.
“...the $25 price of the items mentioned.”
It varies widely all over the country. I had a HUGE French Dip sandwich, bag of Tim’s chips, and a HUGE pile of roast beef for our dogger (we were hungry after hiking) for $20 today.
But there’s no denying prices are way up. I pulled into McDonald’s the other day to get a cheeseburger. Two for $10! Yuck.
“Speaking of which, the average age of NR’s readership is probably 80.”
So, like FR then ?
I miss the old National Review when it was run by paleo conservatives.
This is because we replaced white males in the workforce with imported Indians. Millions of them. And it is with the acquiescence of both parties.
