A PhD Built for the Real World
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | September 4, 2026 | Neeraja Deshpande

In late July, the White House and National Science Foundation announced in the right-leaning tech publication, Pirate Wires, that, beginning this fall, they would be establishing a $47 million program to fund around 250 four-year Industry-Integrated PhD (I-PhD) Scholars in technical fields. The NSF will be funding three of those four years, and 31 universities and 20 companies will be funding the rest—those who have submitted letters of interest include companies like Dow Chemical Company and Lockheed Martin, as well as colleges like Columbia University, North Carolina State University, and the Ohio State University. Students in the pilot program will have a year-long industry placement involving “practical research” that can count towards their dissertation.

“About the same amount of basic research is done today in academia as in the private sector,” Michael Kratsios, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told Pirate Wires. He noted, additionally, that “the institutions which train our next generation of scientists have not really been updated” despite the way scientific research is conducted having changed dramatically.

In other words, this new program will be catching universities and PhD students up to speed, so that their training is actually relevant to their individual careers as well as the broader public interest.

PhD programs around the country are, with a few exceptions like RAND’s, designed to prepare graduate students primarily for academic employment—and yet, increasingly, few opportunities for academic employment exist. About 56% of all new PhDs in 2004 entered academia; in 2024, that number had fallen to just 40%. And much of that 40% is employed rather precariously, with over half of all faculty holding contingent positions, as opposed to more stable tenured or tenure-track employment.

I’m glad to see NC State is on the list. Our smart kids go there.

I would like to see our tech companies offer high school and college classes. It would be a beautiful solution to sending our kids off to liberal ‘elite’ indoctrination centers.

Killing off the commie education system would be a forever gift to the country. Elon - where are you?

Nope. We’re just going to depopulate India. (H1b and H4)

It’s the universities themselves who are responsible for the large numbers of foreigners on campus. There is no room for patriotism. We’re talking about too much money.

AMERICA FOR AMERICANS... THAT TIME HAS COME.

INDIA FOR INDIAINS... MIGA - MAKE INDIA GREAT AGAIN.

MAKE CHINA GREAT AGAIN. MCGA

We all need to be the best we can be - and to pray for George Soros and his evil ilk to die off and never return to our country in any form.

Our country is strong because of OUR culture is good. We don’t need foreign workers who can’t pull off cool countries in the places they come from. If they can’t do it there in their home countries they’ll just mess up what we have here.

We’ve taken in enough people from the rest of the world. It’s time to assimilate the people who are here and keep the door closed until that process is done. Any company that wants Indian workers can build a plant in India.

Yeah, I know.

Liberals can still send their kids to colleges that indoctrinate - where their young can major in underwater basket weaving and/or grievance studies etc etc...

No one is stopping liberals from sending their kids to one of the 99.9% of Universities that are liberal. I'm just saying there might be a nice place for us to send OUR kids to be educated too. I know it's a dream... but it could happen.
