Dubai Step: Trump Declares 'Economic D-Day' on Iran
Hot Air ^ | August 20, 2026 | Ed Morrissey

George W. Bush got the world's attention by drawing a line after 9/11. "You're either with us or against us," Bush warned when it came to radical Islamic terrorism. It provided a clarifying moment in American foreign policy, and carried enough of a military and economic threat that forced cooperation from unlikely sources.

This morning, Donald Trump played the same card Bush did, and against the same type of threat. Trump didn't use precisely the same formulation, but the point comes through clearly. Anyone doing business with Iran will have to choose between the IRGC and having access to Western financial systems and assets:

On MSNOW even liberal David Rohde admitted (worried?) that Trump's Anaconda Plan against Iran could work.

“George W. Bush got the world’s attention by drawing a line after 9/11”

He did?

I must have missed that

Bush must’ve drawn that line with his shoe in the dirt in his backyard

I don’t know. North Texas, where he is, resembles Bin Laden country a lot more than pre-9/11 NYC

That “line in the sand” is something that I definitely don’t recall.

BTW, it was General Winfield Scott who pushed the Anaconda Plan to economically strangle the South and end the Civil War with minimal casualties. It is interesting to note that General Scott in the Mexican War stated in 1847 that he wanted to minimize American deaths to less than 100 in the siege and capture of Veracruz. The final figure was 13 deaths so Scott knew how to extract maximum military effect with minimal fatalities.

The tragedy was that the North rejected his Anaconda Plan until much later in the Civil War when the casualties had already reached high levels.

My concern is that the Islamoterrorist leaders of Iran don’t care about how the “Economic D-Day” will affect the Iranian population. Even if half the Iranian population starve to death, their Islamoterrorist leaders won’t cease their attacks against the U.S. and the West, or stop using what resources they still have to obtain weapons to use against the U.S. and in disrupting the oil economy of the West.

We’ve seen in the past that hundreds of thousands of citizens have been killed or starved under some totalitarian regimes (and millions in Red China). It took two cities vaporized by nuclear bombs to convince Hirohito to surrender in WWII, and even then a number of government and military officials were opposed to surrender, even to the point of trying to stop the Japanese emperor.

It will be no different in Iran. While there may be rational people in Iran, they are not in influential positions in the Iranian government.

BTW, the U.S. cannot exclude itself from government officials (and their followers) having such insane unconcern for lives within the U.S. population. Since the 1973 SCOTUS decision, in the U.S. there have been more than 65 million abortions of people in the womb and the demand to continue that extermination still exists.

Frig’ anything attributed to a Bush family member. That family has done more harm to America than any other family besides the Federal Reserve Rothschilds.

Well, China will be exempted.

Really? Here is a quote about China from the article:

China has deep investments in the US market and will likely avoid a direct confrontation with Trump that could lead to a disruption of their business.

Why worry about a deal with Iran? Since 1979, they have not honored one treaty so why even try? “Negotiations” were not negotiations, they were a stall tactic, and everyone knows that. Push the D-Day button and let them see how far their rhetoric carries them into the future without the ability to pay their soldiers or contain the now-disastrous inflation rate of 80%.

“George W. Bush got the world’s attention by drawing a line after 9/11. “You’re either with us or against us,” Bush warned when it came to radical Islamic terrorism. It provided a clarifying moment in American foreign policy,”

Bush also declared that Islam was the Religion of Peace.

After my wife’s mother died, we had to travel to her funeral. We are in our 70s and had to stand in the Atlanta Airport security line for an hour because Arab Muslim men in their 20s attacked the US on 9/11. “Clarifying moment” my ass.

China will not change behavior and will not be penalized by the US.

Take it to the bank.

Today I’m reading posts on X about TSA agents who are Somali and cannot speak English. Somali Muslims in charge of who gets on an airplane and what they carry? This clarifying moment brought to you by Bush and Obama.

econjack: "Push the D-Day button..."

That's not going to work... and it will only produce more widows and orphans in the U.S.

And it is doubtful that even pushing the "Little Boy" button would work either... unless you push the button for every square mile in Iran.
