If Lynch defeats Graham in the Republican primary and if Massie survives his primary challenge, it will be a defeat for President Trump in his Republican base. Trump is not running for reelection, but he will want to keep his political base. The possible defeats of Cornyn in Texas and Cassidy in Louisiana in their respective GOP primaries will weaken the moderate wing of the Republicans in the Senate. That could lead to the ouster of John Thune as majority leader, assuming the GOP challengers win the November elections and the Republicans maintain a majority.
