JetZero secures $175m to push blended-wing demonstrator toward 2027 flight

JetZero plans to accelerate development of its blended wing body (BWB) commercial aircraft after securing approximately $175 million in new financing, giving the US start-up the resources to push its unconventional airliner concept through full-scale testing and toward flight.

The Series B funding round, led by global investment firm B Capital and backed by a mix of airline, aerospace and industrial investors, will be channelled into advancing the Z4 programme and its associated full-size demonstrator, which JetZero plans to fly in 2027.

The California-based startup said the injection of capital will help it shift from validating the concept to execution for an aircraft it claims could significantly outperform today's tube-and-wing designs on fuel efficiency and emissions.

The blended-wing body Z4 aircraft is hailed for its game-changing design. By blending the wings and the fuselage, drag is reduced and lift increased.

JetZero's demonstrator will provide real-world data to support its claim of at least a 30% aerodynamic improvement over traditional aircraft designs.

The shape draws on decades of blended-wing-body research conducted by industry and government, but aims to be the first to transition the concept into commercial airline service.

They need a boxing ring for the Atlanta based flights.

“JetZERO”?

I could see JetHot, or JetFast or JetCool, or JetMach…but “zero”?

Blended wing body designs for aerodynamic, stability, and control optimization: A comprehensive review
Highlights
•BWB designs achieve up to 30% fuel savings through optimized aerodynamic efficiency.
•Distributed propulsion systems improve thrust efficiency and ensure reliability.
•Hydrogen propulsion aligns BWBs with net-zero emission goals for aviation.
•Unique fuselage design poses challenges in pressurization and passenger comfort.
•BWB configurations offer strong potential in UAV, military, commercial, and cargo transport.

“Net Zero”!
“Hydrogen”!

You just KNOW it’s going to g to be great!

Nope. In the file I built for the topic was this unrelated tidbit, just in case someone asked. 😁

One of the vids that had popped up and got me wondering about it (again, I think I vaguely remember something on FR from a couple years ago, didn’t find anything) showed the plane getting launched off the back of a 747, but I think that was some YouTuber hallucination.

Probably all the good names were taken and/or trademarked.

I think I’d have called La Gefuse, fake French for “fuselage”.

“:Hydrogen propulsion aligns BWBs with net-zero emission goals for aviation.”
Well that’s the ticket right there. How can I invest my entire life savings in this fool-proof concept??? My last investment in the Hindenberg was a smashing success.

We've already had Northrop flying wings. The flying wing and blended body design disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

In the case of this "JetZero" concept, that they'd even show concept aircraft with engines up top like that, when icing peeling off the body will do a number on those engines real quick, shows they're not serious.

I was thinking similar. There’s just no way I’d ever get on a hydrogen propelled anything. The good news there would not be that torturesome feeling for a few minutes while an airplane nose dives into the earth. With this thing the passengers will be instantly cooked to death by all the heat or blown into little bits by the explosion.

And that airplane is just butt ugly.

A full size prototype will fly. As I wrote, we've already had Jack Northrop's flying wings.

The issue will be ice striking the turbine blades, and also ice adding to any that's already forming in the turbine. There are several studies on it.

This thing is supposed to hold 250 passengers?

Never mind the computerized systems that are necessary for yaw stability. Bad enough all the conventional Airbuses are fly by wire.

The subsidiary company, Fantastic Voyage, will take car of those logistics.
