In Texas District 23 for the House of Representatives, Tony Gonzales has dropped out of the race at the request of House Republican leaders. House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republican leaders called on Tony Gonzales to step aside from his current campaign.
In a joint statement, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Majority Whip Tom Emmer, and Conference Chair Lisa McClain said they have urged Gonzales to step aside from the race while the investigation proceeds.
The investigation into ethics complaints against Representative Gonzales began after Brandon Herrera received 43.3% of the vote in the Republican primary election, while Gonzales received 41.7%. Then Gonzalez essentially confirmed an affair with a staffer who later committed suicide, on the Joe Pags Show. The allegations of the affair had mired Gonzalesโ campaign in controversy.ย On March 5, 2026, Gonzales issued a statement on X, saying he would not seek re-election. From X.com:
After deep reflection and with the support of my loving family, I have decided not to seek re-election while serving out the rest of this Congress with the same commitment Iโve always had to my district. Through the rest of my term, I will continue fighting for my constituents, for whom I am eternally grateful.
ย I appreciate Tony Gonzales for making the appropriate decision.

District 23 is in west Texas.
My son likes watching Herrera on YouTube.
Herrera is smart and ambitious. I hope he doesn’t become corrupted in D.C.
He is only 30 years old. Imagine the temptations presented to him there.
Good LORD! All of that is one district?!
Lots of cows there
Lots of empty, endless flat desert in West Texas.
Fun facts: Takes an area larger than the original 13 colonies to group 806k people together. Brewster County alone is larger than New England and only has ~9500 people. Yes there are a lot of cows but the measurement is acres per cow not cows per acre.
;^)
He already has money and fame. Besides, his buddies at the unsubscribe podcast, whom I call the “Boerne Mafia” would set him straight.

Check out Nevada’s district 2:
https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/NV/2.
And the current “R” is not running again.
Yep. Ft. Davis was the hub for that area for a long time. Even today, the county seats for Davis, Brewster, and Presidio counties are only ~25 mi apart from each other but govern a huge swath of W. Texas
Herrera sounds pretty good. My issue is that district. It’s way to...symmetrical. Some federal judge needs to come in and gerrymander the crap out of it like one did my Alabama district.
Yes. It’s mostly empty land. You really have to drive through there to understand it.
... After deep reflection and with the support of my loving family, ...
LOL ... I wonder if Congress has a pre-made stamp, ready to go, with this statement.
FINALLY, this putz drops out. Good riddance.
Two Dem State Senators in that huge NV district.
Tsk tsk.
Mostly desert/cactus land, bluffs, etc. and part of El Paso.
Good news....
We need a few dedicated 2nd amendment Reps in congress - Herrera would be a huge win, and a 1000x improvement.
cathy and jackie are both worthless. Yup, one rep for that vast wilderness known as northern Nevada. And, he ain’t running again.
