The New Mexico legislature is considering a combination gun ban and hyper-regulatory bill, SB17. It is covered in a previous article at Ammoland. The bill bans the future sale of most semi-automatic firearms and detachable magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. Those parts of the bill are almost certainly unconstitutional.
The bill also imposes costly regulatory measures likely to drive many small dealers out of business. SB17 has passed the Senate 21 to 17, with two senators not voting and two more senators absent. The bill is sponsored by six Democratic Party Senators and Senator Peter Wirth, the Senate Majority Floor leader.
The bill passed the New Mexico House Commerce & Economic Development Committee. It is currently being heard by the House Judiciary Committee as of February 17, 2026. Firearms are popular in New Mexico. Second Amendment supporters are mounting a campaign to flood the phone lines of Judiciary Committee members and House members in general.

GREAT.
How did New Mexico turn into a progressive hellhole, governmentwise?
Californicated?
Bill Richardson
Lived in New Mexico for 17 years, nothings changed, and it won’t until they vote the Democrats out of office. That’s not really possible because “uncounted ballot boxes” are found to get enough votes to elect Demon-rats.
Why are Americans allowing this? Anyone trying to usurp the constitution should get a date with a tree, this nonsense would stop fast.
Who are the real Nazis? I’d say the gun confiscators.
Definitely not the NM I was born in and lived in off and on till 1977..
Too many guns? You should have seen America and New Mexico before the 1968 gun control act was passed.
Guns were available at gas stations, liquor stores, hardware stores, sporting goods stores, clothing stores, book stores, record stores, grocery stores, Saddle shops, bus stations.
Cash and carry. No waiting period, no paperwork, no background checks. Just look old enough.
OR, you could chose one from the back of a hunting magazine, drop a check in the mail and it would be shipped right to your door. You could even order fully functional anti-tank rifles and ammo same way.
Yet the murder rate was very low back then and road rage was unheard of. That all changed for the worse when in the 1970s the mental hospitals were closed down and the crazies declared “sane” and released on the streets. Murder rate and mass murder rates took of like a rocket.
Confiscating guns would hopefully lead to a lot of dead cops.
