President Trump is, Joe Manchin believes, the “most charming person in the world”.
“I wish that people could see that part of him,” the former Democratic senator told The Times. “And I wish he could show more of that compassion. He’s a tremendous host and he talks to you and he listens to you and he engages with you.
“He might do whatever he wants, but he still engages. We had a good rapport.”
Manchin’s praise for Trump is in many ways remarkable, coming from a man who was once one of Joe Biden’s most important allies — if also, perhaps, his greatest frustration. For much of the Biden presidency, the West Virginia senator was among the most powerful men in the country, the deciding vote in a chamber split 50-50 and the final holdout on a slate of key bills.
In the end, the conservative Democrat had so much contact with Biden that he could gauge whether the president was upset with him simply from whether he was addressed as “Jo-jo” or “Joe”.
Now Manchin has left the party to join a record number of disillusioned voters registering as independent. Some 45 per cent of Americans now identify as independents, according to a recent poll by Gallup, the highest since it began tracking this in the 1980s and surpassing the 43 per cent measured in 2014, 2023 and 2024.

The “praise” must have come when he voted against him every time and voted for impeachment twice.
Yes. But he voted (along with Sinema) to maintain the filibuster. Otherwise, DC and PR were going to become states. +4 in the Senate for the Democratic Party.
As a result, Sinema and Manchin are no longer in the Senate.
I would argue they’ve lost their minds, not their way, but that’s just me.
That was the least of it. The first thing the rats were going to do was add 8 Jacksons the SC. They had them picked out and ready to go. Trump would be not be President and he would be in jail.
Obviously, Sinema and Manchin are not getting enough credit for saving the Republic on that day, IMHO.

He is smarmy and like almost all those groomed in the senate every word is a political calculation.
Not that I would ever trust Fetterman, but when he speaks I don’t get the feeling he is offering a political calculation.
Of course that may be because he is half crazy or medicated.
Agree, in a number of ways those two unlikely heroes saved our country. Yeah they voted many times the wrong way but on the most important vote of their terms they did the right thing. I don’t think there is any rat left that would do it again.
Dems only care about importing as many voters as possible in order to secure a one party rule forever. That is ALL THEY CARE ABOUT. Heck I was watching Hannity yesterday(And honestly Hannity did a pretty good job interviewing the prick) that schmuck that wants to impeach Trump, the Indian guy who killed dogs and whose wife offed herself(Who can blame her) Hannity asked him why he wouldnt stand for Jocelyn, why he voted against a bill that would deport illegal alien sex offenders, and he just had the stupidest SMIRK on his face, the ENTIRE time Sean was asking him questions, the weirdest disgusting looking smirk, I wanted to wipe off his ugly face! They enjoy this, they enjoy illegals harming Americans, as long as it keeps them in power who cares who they kill
It sounds like a lot of people here on Free Republic don’t trust them. And we fundamentally disagree with them politically. Neither of them are Free Republic conservatives.
So based on that, it’s hard for some people to give credit to them for doing something good while they were in public office.

Is he up for re-election this year?
Manchin wanted to be the next Byrd. That deal was increasingly impossible to do while a Rat. Also as the Rat party radicalized nationality it hemorrhaged followers in WV. Switching to GOP put him in competition with other GOP senior senators including his WV counterpart Capito. Capito is also trying to be the next Byrd. He tried to maintain a middle ground where every year the middle was cut away, mostly by his fellow Ratlanders.
Since he’s surfaced and making political comments. Manchin may be testing out challenging Justice (WV’s other GOP Senator). Justice’s health is questionable. He’s also a potential financial scandal ready to explode. In the state Justice is said to be broke. He and his companies are underwater financially then they’re not, then they are, etc. an endless news cycle repeat! Somehow he and his companies are managing to keep that plate spinning. Maybe a Capito challenge but she’s fairly popular. People seem to want her to be the next Byrd. I think that would be a much harder job to pull off.
Communists everywhere never care about the people even though they pretend to, they only care about the party. It’s always been that way and always will no matter what communists are currently calling themselves. The current brand of American communists (democrats) are probably the dumbest ever.
