Keir Starmer goes big on wind power — even as Trump trashes it

Prime Minister Keir Starmer usually goes out of his way not to annoy Donald Trump. So he better hope the windmill-hating U.S. president doesn’t notice what the U.K. just did.

In a fillip for the global offshore wind industry, Starmer’s government on Wednesday announced its biggest-ever down payment on the technology.

It agreed to price guarantees, funded by billpayers to the tune of up to £1.8 billion (€2.08 billion) a year, for eight major projects in England, Scotland and Wales.

The schemes have the capacity to generate 8.4 gigawatts of electricity, the U.K. energy department said — enough to power 12 million homes. It represented the biggest “wind auction in Europe to date,” said industry group WindEurope.

It’s also an energy strategy that could have been tailor-made to rankle Trump.

The U.S. president has repeatedly expressed a profound loathing for wind turbines and has tried to use his powers to halt construction on projects already underway in the U.S. — sending shockwaves across the global industry.

Even when appearing alongside Starmer at press conferences, Trump has been unable to hide his disgust at the very sight of windmills.

“You are paying in Scotland and in the U.K. … to have these ugly monsters all over the place,” he said, sitting next to Starmer during a visit to his Turnberry golf course last year.

The spinning blades, Trump complained, would “kill all your birds.”

At the time, the prime minister explained meekly that the U.K. was seeking a “mix” of energy sources. But this week’s investments speak far louder about his government's priorities.

It worked so good for “ScotWind” that they took all the money from auctioning the project and used it to prop up the national “budget” and not a single windmill has been installed.

Most of the wind will be supplied by Starmer, his cabinet and Parliment.

Yes, the UK has significantly higher household energy prices than the US.

Yep turns out that free energy from the wind and the sun is damn expensive, unreliable and destructive in a number of ways. Starmer is a F’n idiot.

WIKI

Most turbines in the European Union produce electricity at an average of 25% of their rated maximum power due to the variability of wind resources, but Scotland’s wind regime provides average capacity factor of 31% or higher on the west and northern coasts. The load factor recorded for the onshore North Rhins windfarm near Stranraer was 40%, which is typical for well-sited mainland windfarms. A small wind farm in Shetland with five Vestas V47 660 kW turbines recently achieved a world record of 58% capacity over the course of a year. This record is claimed by Burradale windfarm, located just outside Lerwick and operated by Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd. Since opening in 2000, the turbines at this wind farm have had an average capacity factor of 52% and, according to this report, in 2005 averaged a world record 57.9%. However, a Scottish opposition group found 124 separate occasions from 2008 to 2010 when the nation’s wind output fell to less than 2% of installed capacity. On the west and northern coasts Scotland’s wind regime can provide an average of 40% or higher.

It is estimated that 11.5 GW of onshore wind potential exists, enough to provide about 45 TWh of energy in a year, allowing for wind variability. More than double this amount exists on offshore sites where mean wind speeds are greater than on land.

Trump may have trashed it but 3 district judges on the East Coast said he couldn’t stop it and reversed his decision. We keep getting screwed by the Black Robes. And we aren’t getting Trump judges approved because of Blue Slip games.

Drive along I-10 west from the AZ border to LA. There’s 100’s of these pieces of garbage littering the countryside. From what I’ve been told, a lot of them don’t work anymore.

The solution to wind power is easy. Get government money (our tax dollars) the hell out of it and remove tax breaks. The electrical providers can then build them at their own risk. Few would be built if any.

Completely idiotic in a country that is paying FOUR TIMES as much for energy as the US is paying. This will of course make industry nearly impossible in the UK and thus is rapidly deindustrializing both Germany and the UK for their idiotic religious devotion to Gaia.
