Sorta the same rationale’ was used in putting Ford into the Veep slot. Not that he was dumb by any means. He was a non-entity that had no scandal attached to him.
But, when the chips fell we got an unelected Pres, who also had no expectation of getting another term. This put him in the unique position to do some wild-arsed stuff that no elected politico could get away with — like staring down NKorea when they got uppity — so much so that when they threatened war he replied: “OK, let’s go. It is not like I have to go to Congress for a declaration, we are already at war. Wanna talk first to Japan about what a small nuke can do?”
