I remember the Bomber gas station in Milwaukie, OR when I was young. I think someone finally bought that B-17 and is restoring it.

I went to Pima about 30 years ago. I love aircraft museums. Have been to Chino Planes of Fame, Air Force Museum in Dayton, and Air & Space in DC. Loved Cavanaugh in Addison until it was moved.

Update: The B-17G, named “Lady Lacey” (after Art Lacey’s British wife), began undergoing a serious restoration effort in 2012, when the nose and cockpit were removed. On August 13, 2014, the rest of the bomber was removed, and the restoration proceeds at the B-17 Alliance Museum in Salem. The Lacey family estimated that the plane could be worth millions if restored to flying condition, which meant bye-bye bomber forever as a gas station awning.

Thanks. (I suppose the owners could still use it as an awning after it was restored to flying condition, but I'll bet they don't.)

“”Was just at PIMA in Tucson last month (across the street from Davis-Monthan).””

I was thinking of that when this thread came up. We saw those planes many years ago when we visited family in Tucson...It was an amazing sight as are those in this thread..Think of the hours on those planes and where they’ve been....

I’m one of the volunteers at Pima. Lots of new stuff here this year to include the Martin Mars 4-engine flying boat. We also opened the Military Vehicle Museum, which has many armored vehicles and artillery pieces from WW2 to present day.

I definitely want to see the Military Vehicle Museum too. Do you happen to know if D-M ever plans to resume the boneyard tours? I never took that before they stopped it.

A B-29 would make a great AirBnB.

Boneyard tours are probably not coming back anytime soon. The USAF security at DM is really tight, and I don’t think they want to deal with tourists anymore. Basically, you have to have an active or retired military ID to enter the base.

That’s about what I’ve heard from a friend who’s a contractor working at D-M. Oh, well. Should have taken the tour when I could.

I’d take a 119 and 123 ...if I had a place to put them.

Oooh, nice modern history topic. Plus, FR could start its own airforce.
